"I am quite certain that neither love nor grief can ever be excessive; each is its own absolute measure, and knows its own proper proportions. And, as a rule, we generally fail to love or grieve nearly as much as we ought to do."
~David Bentley Hart
Lots of people are missing the point of this. Yes, it can be used for scams. But so can lots of other AI tools.
These guys made a true speech-to-speech model trained on nothing but human vocal conversation. That's pretty amazing!
~Half of conversations I have about Jesus these days ends up invoking The Chosen. "Did you see how The Chosen did it?"
I haven't seen The Chosen. No desire. But I wonder what the series has done to our spiritual imagination. Is it good to have "seen" these events in this way?
I think of when @PageauJonathan said that, if we could go back in time or find a video recording of the events in the gospels, we'd probably be pretty underwhelmed with what we saw. Indeed, many witnessed firsthand but did not believe.
Are Jesus' miracles things that can be impartially observed? Was the Resurrection something that could have been captured on camera?
Even if GOP keeps the Senate, this is getting into pyrrhic victory territory. $400M from one guy to prop up the most unpopular POTUS in a century? At best to hobble over the finish line with a 51/49 majority and House gone?
Trump will be as unpopular on Nov 4 as on Nov 2, no matter what happens. $400M for two years of lame duck nothing, and probably to make 2028 even harder.

I say it every two years: Early voting is an epic disaster waiting to happen.
Nobody should be voting in any election 2-3 weeks before votes are counted.
One day, a candidate will die or do something scandalous after millions have already voted, and all of his/her voters will want their vote back. Whether they get it or not, the resulting outcome will not be acceptable to the ultimate loser. Chaos will ensue.
Just a terrible idea, all around.
Right now on @Kalshi, David Jolly has a better chance of winning than Vivek Ramaswamy 🤯
When did everyone start wearing sneakers with suits? Did I miss the memo that we were all going to start looking uglier?

"Anti-" is a relation. You can't know "anti-Christ" unless you know "Christ." The deeper you dive into just one side of that equation, the more wrong you're likely to be.
Thiel (allegedly) knows anti-Christ. Does Thiel know Christ? He should consider lecturing on that, next.
This is the galling contradiction in so much of the history of Christendom, with all its glories and all its atrocities, and probably explains its unique distinction as the one 'religious' civilization that destroyed itself from within, not only by abandoning its faith's inmost imperatives, but also by obeying them even when their rationales had been lost.
It may be the case that Christianity can create a civilization, but can never comfortably inhabit one. It is always instead establishing the conditions of its own exile, founding the Ur of the Chaldees from which it will eventually have to depart. Historically it has always been its own crisis, its own cataclysm. No sooner does the faith complete what it has built than the old familiar ache returns, because this enduring city is still not yet Christ, still not yet the Kingdom, even if the 'Christian Nationalist' or 'Integralist' insists on proclaiming ‘here it is’ or 'there it is'; this is just the old lie once again that obscures the truth that 'the Kingdom of God is inside of you' (Luke 17:21) and that it arrives on earth unheralded, always 'like a thief in the night' (Matthew 24:43-44; 1 Thessalonians 5:2).
This is why 'Christian' identitarians will always turn out to be heathens in the end. There is nothing intrinsically wrong in heathenism, of course; I am half a heathen myself on my better days; but, for Christians, if the original gospel is true at all, there is a love much higher than – and irreconcilable with – the love of blood and the will of the flesh.

I mean, it's hard to argue with this. My only quibble is that there is no "course correction" possible. Humanity is presently consumed by "social tech." This is only just begun, and will take many decades to wear off – only after the "cultural flattening" runs out of targets.
“Modern authentic group identity” necessarily comes from the internet now. Any given person below a certain age has more in common with their algorithmic fellow-travelers than their neighbors. Global flattening of material living standards and supply chains has only amplified the process, which contrary to some earlier thinkers wasn’t inevitable until social media framed it as an explicit goal (often via drawing on said thinkers, whose prophecies became self-fulfilling). But as things stand, the Nation as a regional phenomenon — to the extent it still even exists — will fully die without adapting. The only power to try so far, afaict, is China; compare the Douyin algorithm to TikTok in the US. They gladly push the latter in the opposite direction for us, and why shouldn’t they? Allowing this is a massive US own-goal, akin to the fentanyl crisis… but I digress. The future — without massive course-correction — is legacy state-apparatuses competing for extraction rights from delocalized people-group tributaries, enabled by AI (which amounts to a technical interface with Culture, requiring none of the labor or tact of yesterday’s “psyops”). 90s-00s kindergarten-globalism is a fairytale, the endpoint is eternal low-grade noetic war.
Vance sees only one cause behind every problem – "mass migration." He has a simplistic and historically illiterate outlook on the world, no doubt having at least something to do with his youth and lack of real-world experience.
(Trump, to his credit, is not like this.)
Thankfully, very few Americans shares this perspective.
Western liberals imported the third world into France and other countries in the name of diversity and compassion. They ignored fundamental questions of assimilation and compatibility. They were told it would lead to this and they didn't listen.
I pray that France, a beautiful country of amazing people, will stop this madness before more of its landmarks burn.
And I hope Americans are paying attention. This is the future congressional Democrats seek for your country.
I feel this.
Putting abstract ideas into words (even if only as part of an "inner monologue") means you're reifying these abstract things, making them less "pure" than they would otherwise be. Isn't it better to leave things unspoken in their unspoken form, rather than force them into the English language in order to deal with them? Not everything requires words in order to understand or engage with them *in your own head.*
Plotinus: "One must not suppose that the gods ... contemplate propositions, but all the forms we speak about are beautiful images in that world, of the kind that someone imagined to exist in the soul of the wise man, images not painted but real."
Good take 👇
a big take I've been noodling on and I’m ready to call:
the newsletter is dead
@every's core business is a newsletter with 120k+ subscribers so I don't say this lightly.
persistent agents mean i dont look at my inbox
with dots (GrokBots, Muse, etc) I almost never look at my inbox. if I do it's for a specific thing I need to reply to.
i think in a year I'll be doing all of my email this way - fully filtered by my dot / something like it.
this is not new: it's a continuation of the trend of having a “newsletter” folder in Gmail, but 10x more filtered.
what it means
It doesn’t mean people won't read newsletters, but it does mean that getting a person’s email is no longer the guarantee that you have a relationship with them that it used to.
luckily, with persistent agents (and AI coding more generally) there is an entirely new playing field to build relationships with readers. instead of fighting to get an email address, publishers and creators will need to make sure we're installed in our reader's agent harness of choice, so that they get directly notified when we do something new.
we're already starting to experiment with this @every with our MCP and the frontier alerts we send users of our slack agent (every.to/agent)
it's also more affordable than ever for publishers and creators to build their own platform ecosystem: you can have your own website, app etc. and you can use AI to publish 100x more high-quality stuff to your community—so we may see a world where many creators themselves are running their own little empires that have their own apps, feeds etc.
to be clear: It'll take a while before this actually happens, but the idea of getting someone's email creating a direct relationship with them is over.
here's a set of predictions I made 3 years ago about AI and media that panned out pretty well: every.to/chain-of-thought/we…
Five years of inflation. Everything about this economy works against young and low-income people.
Inflation is pernicious and evil – even more so when it's the intentional policy choice of the wealthy and asset-owners, who suffer less (even win) when the Treasury prints cash.
