No Health Declaration Form, No Boarding at Freetown Airport — SLCAA Warns The Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority (SLCAA) has announced that all passengers travelling to or from Freetown International Airport must complete the required Health Declaration Forms before their arrival or departure. In a public notice dated 21 October 2026, the authority warned that passengers who fail to comply with the requirement will be denied boarding. “Failure to comply with the above will result in denial of boarding,” the SLCAA stated. Passengers are advised to complete their forms before travelling to the airport and keep them available for verification to avoid unnecessary delays or disruptions. The notice, signed by SLCAA Director General Musayeroh Barrie, also calls on airlines and travel agencies to inform passengers about the requirement. #SierraLeone #FreetownAirport #SLCAA #TravelAlert #HealthDeclaration #Aviation #SaloneMessenger

#SierraLeone led the UN to recognize a day to end child marriage — a real win. But if child marriage & FGM are inextricably linked, why does one get a global stage & the other silence at home? Time to match advocacy w/ courage. linkedin.com/pulse/world-wat… #EndFGM #EndChildMarriage

We must resist the temptation to baptise every disagreement with the vocabulary of oppression. If Mr Elumelu says, “Address me as Mr Elumelu,” that is not class warfare. It is a boundary. The gateman deserves dignity. The chairman deserves dignity. Human equality does not abolish protocol, seniority or earned distinction. And the young lady must never be subjected to public humiliation. Correction should educate, not destroy. Africa will not cure inequality by making disrespect fashionable. Let us democratise dignity, not trivialise respect.

High Court Issues Landmark Orders on SLBA Membership List and AGM Eligibility In a significant ruling that could shape the outcome of the #SierraLeone Bar Association’s long-delayed Annual General Meeting, the High Court has ordered the association’s executive to publish a complete list of fully paid-up members by 29 July 2026. Honourable Justice Mark Ngegba delivered the orders this morning in Miscellaneous Application 125/26. The case was brought by Ebunoluwa Tengbe, a member of the association, against the Sierra Leone Bar Association (SLBA) and its current leadership under the Companies Act 2009 and the association’s own Memorandum and Articles of Association. The defendants named in the suit are the SLBA itself, President Tuma Adama Gento-Kamara, Vice President Sidique Tommy, General Secretary Alfred Paul Juwah, Assistant General Secretary Abubakarr Sidique Kamara, Treasurer Sotto Kobba, Assistant Treasurer Yoko Mahiteh Brewah, Public Relations Officer Alfred Kamanda, and Rokel Commercial Bank (SL) Limited. Counsel A. S. Lansana appeared for the plaintiff, while I. F. Sawaneh represented the first to eighth defendants and opposed the application. The Court’s Five Orders Justice Ngegba directed as follows: The first to eighth defendants must publish the full list of members who have paid their registration, subscription and conference fees and are therefore eligible to participate in the Annual General Meeting not later than 29 July 2026. The only method to be used for processing and verifying the voter registration list and eligibility is the bank payment slip of payments made by members on or before the 29 May 2026 deadline. Elections for the new executive of the SLBA must be conducted strictly in accordance with the provisions of the association’s Memorandum and Articles of Association. Access to the venue and participation in the AGM shall be granted solely on the basis of verified bank payment slips showing payment of subscription and conference fees not later than 29 May 2026 and by no other means. The first to eighth defendants must furnish the plaintiff and all members of the SLBA with the association’s audited financial statements together with bank statements covering the period 1 May 2024 to 1 June 2026 not later than 30 July 2026. The Originating Summons was filed on 10 June 2026 and supported by an affidavit sworn by the plaintiff on the same date. The ruling comes against the backdrop of the SLBA’s postponed AGM, which was originally scheduled for early June 2026, and a closely watched contest for the presidency of the association between incumbent Tuma Adama Gento-Kamara and challenger Martina Baindu Egbenda. Concerns had been raised by some members about delays and difficulties in verifying subscription payments and the accuracy of the voters’ list. The court’s decision imposes strict, time-bound requirements for transparency and uniform verification ahead of any meeting or election. A certified true copy of the order, signed by the Master and Registrar, was issued immediately after the ruling. The SLBA executive now faces clear deadlines. Members and observers will be watching closely to see whether the association complies fully with the court’s directives in the coming days.

The work that shapes the future is often invisible. Long before policies are adopted, agreements are signed, or progress becomes visible, there are countless hours spent listening, learning, questioning, and building trust. Over the years, I've come to understand that diplomacy is not simply the art of negotiation. It is the discipline of bringing people together around a shared purpose, especially when differences seem greater than common ground. Whether serving Sierra Leone, engaging in multilateral dialogue, or working alongside young leaders committed to positive change, one conviction continues to guide me: Strong institutions are built by people who choose service over status, collaboration over competition, and purpose over recognition. I'm grateful for every opportunity to keep learning, to serve with humility, and to contribute to a future where peace, inclusive governance, and youth leadership are not aspirations, but realities. The work continues…

Your ability to lead and leave edible marks, is nothing to be questioned. I’m sure your leadership will provide the needed steering the Bar needs, as it is at a crossroads. Now, Sierra Leone needs a united Bar, more than ever.
DECLARATION OF CANDIDACY: FOR THE OFFICE OF VICE-PRESIDENT SIERRA LEONE BAR ASSOCIATION United we stand and divided we fall – we do not want to fall and, if we are to stand strong, we need to be united. Learned Colleagues and Members of the Sierra Leone Bar Association, With humility, conviction, and a deep sense of professional responsibility, I formally declare my intention to run for the office of Vice-President of the Sierra Leone Bar Association for 2026/2027. I am Nicky Spencer- Coker, and I present myself for service at a critical moment in the history of our Bar and our Nation — a moment that calls for principled leadership, mutual respect, institutional renewal, professional solidarity, and an unwavering commitment to justice, integrity, and the rule of law. As a Barrister and Solicitor of the High Courts of Sierra Leone for almost 14 years, my professional journey has been shaped by service, advocacy, and leadership, both nationally and internationally. My national service includes legal advocacy as a State Counsel at the Law Officers Department and then Defence Counsel for the Legal Aid Board Sierra Leone; where I represented numerous Sierra Leoneans who could not afford legal representation. On the international stage I have served as First Secretary and Spokesperson of the Permanent Mission of Sierra Leone to the United Nations. In that role I represented our country with distinction, and engaged on critical global legal and policy issues. In addition, I have served our noble profession in various executive positions; most notably as Vice-President of L.A.W.Y.E.R.S, and as the first woman Secretary of the General Legal Council - a position I held for seven years with distinction. These experiences have strengthened my belief that the legal profession must remain a fearless guardian of constitutionalism, human rights, democratic governance, and access to justice for all. Learned Colleagues, leadership is SERVICE and It requires courage, integrity, competence, and the ability to UNITE. I offer myself to serve as the Vice-President of the oldest Bar Association in Sub-Saharan Africa; with a sincere commitment to serve diligently, inclusively, and transparently. I respectfully seek your support, prayers, and confidence as we work together to unite the Bar, build a stronger, more responsive, and more progressive Sierra Leone Bar Association. May we continue to uphold the nobility of our profession and the enduring ideals of justice. God bless the Sierra Leone Bar Association. God bless the Republic of Sierra Leone. NICKY SPENCER-COKER, ESQ. Barrister and Solicitor Candidate for Vice-President Sierra Leone Bar Association

This morning, in Geneva, we presented Sierra Leone’s human rights report to the UN Human Rights Council as part of the Universal Periodic Review process. In our country’s report, we presented in good faith the progress achieved since our last review in 2021, including important constitutional, legal, institutional, and policy reforms, as well as the challenges that remain and our ongoing efforts to address them. We addressed efforts made to strengthen human rights through protection of civil and political rights as well as investments in socio-economic rights. We affirmed Sierra Leone’s strong commitment to the full implementation of the Universal Periodic Review recommendations and to the continued strengthening of its human rights framework. The Government remains determined to build on the progress achieved, address remaining challenges, and advance a just, inclusive, and rights-based society grounded in dignity, equality, and the rule of law. We consider the UPR not only as a mechanism of accountability, but also as a valuable platform for shared learning, the exchange of best practices, and the strengthening of national human rights systems.
