JC French did not play a single down of college football in 2022. Not one snap. He sat at Memphis the whole year and redshirted, and in December he put his name in the transfer portal. Today he beat the number eight team in the country. Cincinnati knocked off Texas Tech, who came into the game undefeated. Now go back and look at the road this guy took to get there. His name is James Charles French the fourth. He is from Roswell, Georgia, the son of Lisa and Jimmy French, and he has a sister named Ellie. He started at quarterback at Wesleyan High School as a freshman. Fourteen years old. He threw for 1,901 yards and 13 touchdowns that season. By his junior year he put up 2,902 yards and 32 touchdowns and took them to a state final. Then he changed schools for his senior year and finished at Blessed Trinity Catholic. Memphis took him. Then Memphis never played him. So he went to Georgia Southern, in the Sun Belt, which is not where anybody goes to be noticed. His first year there he threw 16 passes all season. He hurt his elbow and missed the bowl game. Then they gave him the job. He started all 13 games in 2024 and completed 65.6 percent of his throws, which is still a Georgia Southern record. He threw for 2,831 yards. He started all 13 again in 2025, threw for 2,929 yards and 20 touchdowns, and led the entire team in rushing touchdowns as a quarterback. They made him a captain. He finished his marketing degree. Nobody in a power conference had called him in four years. Cincinnati did. They had lost their starting quarterback to Texas Tech in January and they needed somebody, and the somebody they got was a fifth year kid out of the Sun Belt. Here is what he has done with it. Through seven games he has thrown for 1,338 yards and nine touchdowns. He has not thrown a single interception all season. Be fair about today, though. Texas Tech spent an enormous amount of money rebuilding that roster and they were ranked eighth in the country for a reason, and a team that good losing on the road in October says as much about them as it does about him. One win does not make a career. But a quarterback who was on a roster for an entire season without taking a snap, who had to drop to the Sun Belt to get on a field at all, walked out at Nippert Stadium in his fifth year of college football and beat an undefeated top ten team. That is the kind of thing that only happens to people who were still there to let it happen.
