Start of the year and lots of runners are seeking advice re: injury. It made me think how I clinically approach the educational process of trying to create a sustainable runner and what I value most to be most effective for long term #sustainablerunning – at Adelaide, South Australia

We were out there to win, @cameronmyers06, but just one guy in the world got in the way. Well done indeed, Josh Kerr! Extremely pleased with the progress Cam's made in a remarkable 9 months of racing. Time to relax a little now and plan his next progression into Beijing
PURE RACING 🇦🇺🔥
Cameron Myers did not put a foot wrong in a star-studded 1500m at the World Athletics Ultimate Championship, claiming second place in 3:29.68!
The 20-year-old could only be topped by Great Britain's Josh Kerr in 3:29.35.

Pre-race pep talks are coaching tools of trade. Not for @cameronmyers06 before his Bowermsn mile. It was simply a brief "when the pace withdraws, you'll be in the lead. Then run relaxed and strong upfront. Find out fairly and squarely who is the fittest on the day".

It’s hard to overstate how impressive this is.
3:29.85.

What a sensational run by Cam Myers to win the Australian 1500m title.

The most Australian crash I've ever seen, a kangaroo jumped in the peloton. 😳🦘 "Final destination" stuff for UAE, it made Bjerg (who abandoned) and race leader Vine crash. They have only 3 riders left in the race... #TourDownUnder

Imagine a 16 year old Sophomore in High School running...
200m- 19.75
400m- 43.88
Mile- 3:45.6
5k- 12:46
Those are the equivalent times to what Cooper Lutkenhaus just ran in the 800m (1:42.27) as a 16 year old.
Insanity.

This is "Professional" racing in Australia
The term 'professionals' harks back to the day when there was segregation between professionals and 'amateurs'.
The first professional winners from the Stawell Gift, the most famous and oldest of the pro-running events, ran a major amateur event in 1986 (Commonwealth Games).
At Stawell, as well as prize money ($40,000 for the Gift), you get grass tracks, handicaps, and coloured bibs (depending on your handicap) ... for the spectator there's on course betting.
Gout Gout and Lachie Kennedy are two of the many big names from the recent Nationals to make the trip from Perth to Stawell.
Their heat races ...

What do you do when the lights go out during the final of the 1500m?
Clearly nothing stops the racing and plenty of PBs run despite the darkness.
Well done Vic Milers Club and the hand-timers especially!
1. Seth O'Donnell 3:36.8h PB
2. Lucas Chis 3:42.1h PB
3. Charles Barrett 3:42.9h PB

Distance running performances are insane!
What’s the biggest change in training recently? Blended workouts instead of straight repeats.
You used to see more 8x1k or 5x 1 mile. Focused on one stimulus or zone at a time. No or limited mixing.
Now you see more blended: Where we are mixing the stimulus/zone.
Consider Yared Nuguse's workout before his world record mile:
2k threshold- 6:00
2k- hard: 4:59
5x1k at 3:00-3:05 (threshold)
4x 200s in 26-27
He's bouncing back and forth between threshold work and very specific/speed endurance.
You see way more of these types of workouts now than during the 2000-2010s.
Back then, largely influenced by the Daniels/Vigil model, workouts were aimed at one purpose. Want to improve threshold? Go do 5 mile tempo. Vo2max? 6x800 at 3k pace.
But in the 2010s, something changed. Renato Canova became popular and introduced more blended , alternations, and mixed workouts.
You 'played' up and down the intensity ladder.
Workouts like:
-5 sets of (1200 @ 5k, 500 @ mile pace)
-4x1k threshold, 8x400 @ mile, 4x1k @ threshold
And so on become more accepted.
We realized that we don't need to target one specific energy system, zone, or whatever. And that 'mixing' signals doesn't take away from the workout.
This isn't new. Igloi was doing this in the 1940s. Even Bowerman and crew did a lot of mixed/blended work back in the day.
But with the rise of physiological markers and zones we became convinced that we need to target one specific zone at a time.
Modern training has recognized that's not true.
Now, we still do straight repeats and workouts where we target one system. Those aren't going away!
But what we realized is that we don't have to be stuck doing that. We can be more creative. We can target (and thus maintain) different adaptations in the same workout.

I love science.
But for training & workouts, the science is a decade or two behind
So when people ONLY know the research...they're generally out of date on best practices
Science is best at explaining why, not giving you what
You need science + history + practice

Before saying we NEED dynamometers in practice we need to answer:
1. Does strength mediate recovery?
aka: if you don't get stronger it is much less likely your pain and function will improve 1/
