Full circle moment! Dec 2000, I was a 5th year medical student volunteering in the maternity ward at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, where I was BORN! The same hospital that sparked my passion to study medicine. What a blessing it was to give back where my life began 🙌

The apartheid government was very violent against children. The murder of the 5 children in Mthatha by the SA Defence Force (SADF) is shocking, but not unexpected for those of us who experienced the violence of the SA Police (SAP) as activists and youth and student leaders in Soweto. I spent my formative years as a youth and student activist in the early 1990s when I got to high school, through COSAS , the Soweto Youth Congress (SOYCO) and later ANC Youth League in 1991. My first-hand experience of children being abused as 13-15 year olds was when I witnessed them being badly beaten in a student meeting held at the Jabavu Youth Centre. At the end of 1989, at the age of 13, they picked up my friend who had a PAC emblem. They took me and him, drove us around Soweto and made us jump from a moving car. By age 14, they had attacked us as COSAS leaders, rounded us up between Soweto and Park Station, set dogs on us and pepper-sprayed us. By age 15, we were ambushed in a bus by hostel dwellers on our way from Orlando Stadium in 1992. Old men chased us with spears and shot at us. It is this violence against children perpetrated by the government from the late 1980s up to 1993 that is not spoken about enough.

Dr Vuyelwa Mashalaba (1946 - 1996) was a South African anti-apartheid activist, medical doctor, and key figure in the Black Consciousness Movement (BCM) and the Azanian People's Organization (AZAPO).  As the first female Secretary of the South African Student Organization (SASO) from 1970–1971, she played a crucial role in establishing the movement. She was elected as a secretary during the inaugural conference of SASO in July 1969 and served as the General Secretary from 1970 to 1971. While studying at the Wentworth medical school (University of Natal Non-European section), she was part of the small group of black students who sat on the Students' Representative Council (SRC) at the previously white Howard College. She played a vital role in introducing other prominent activists to the Black Consciousness Movement. Credit: SAHO, Teleki E Teleke

Woke up to a beautiful text from my patient's son — my portrait. It is these heartwarming moments that make being a community-based doctor so rewarding. It's not just about treating illness, it's about touching lives. And your patients and the community touch you too, in special ways — from being given live chickens by gogos, to receiving prayers from church groups, to portraits from relatives. I'm truly grateful. 🙏🏾❤️

Majita, RE A LEBOGA! ❤️ Last night we hosted the first ever Majita Monday at Inspiration Campus. I was optimistic, but even I did not expect what happened — over 160 men from across Taung, all ages, all classes, all in one room. We laughed, we reflected, and we had the honest conversations we as men never have. My heartfelt thanks to every man who came, to the Inspiration Campus team for being the best hosts, to our Key Note Speaker for a powerful message, and to our Programme Director for steering the night so well. We could not answer all your questions due to time — we have noted them. Our next gathering will be dedicated to answering them. This movement has started. Strong Men. Strong Families. Stronger Communities. #MajitaMondays #LegaePrivateClinic #Taung #RealMenRealTalkRealImpact

2026 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Navi Pillay’s commitment to universal legal principles and her firm moral compass are constants in a long career. Born into a family of Indian Tamil origin under apartheid in Durban, South Africa, Pillay became a lawyer and legal pioneer, confronting deep structural discrimination, segregation and exclusion. A common thread runs from her early work defending Nelson Mandela and others who stood up against apartheid to her service as a judge in some of the key international court cases of our time. This year’s laureate has significantly enlarged the scope and impact of international law. She has served as a judge on the High Court in South Africa, the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the International Criminal Court. She was the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and, until recently, she chaired the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory. Today Navi Pillay is a judge on the International Court of Justice in the case where Myanmar stands accused of genocide. In historic international court cases, she has shown that legal measures can help prevent acts of war and violence. Navi Pillay has also contributed to strengthen the institutions of international law. Her independence, expertise and steadfastness have made her one of the most respected international jurists of our time. Highly regarded Blackburn Rovers midfielder Camden Schaper (15) has received his first international call-up for South Africa.🤩🇿🇦 A couple of months ago, Camden made his U18s debut against Hull City at just 14 years old. He has also had opportunities to train with Blackburn Rovers’ U21s.🤯 Last season, Camden registered 75 G/A (41 goals and 34 assists), most of which came while playing up an age group for the U15s.⚽️🅰️ Camden will face multiple Bundesliga academies with South Africa’s U16 age group before heading to Azerbaijan for the U15 World Cup.✅ What an experience both camps are going to be for him.👏🌟
