If you ask an academic what they are an expert in and they say "teaching" then they probably don't belong within fifty feet of a university
SOLT research is really "salting the earth" of the higher education Carthage, hey. Nothing good grows from colleges and departments where people pass off pedagogical thought bubbles as disciplinary research

ME: False. "Bull" is a word to describe intact adult male of various bovine species.
HE: Intact?
ME: (with eyes glistening from fever) UNCASTRATED.

This should be illegal.
The harms of this tech (enabling scams & fraud) obviously outweigh any potential benefits right now.
Politicians should outlaw this as a matter of urgency.
We believe voice is the most natural way to interact with intelligence, so we created Dessa, the most authentic full-duplex speech model ever built. Talking with it feels like talking with a person…full of emotion, nuance, pauses, and a natural cadence.

Academics should get used to the idea that the parts of the internet we most value - preprint archives, journals, encyclopedias - don't have big cybersecurity budgets and might well not survive what's coming.

The basic question I have for pro-liberals arts higher ed. reformers is this: where, exactly, is change going to come from? It’s certainly not going to come from administrators. Almost certainly not from faculty, either. And it’s not going to come from students or parents.

Circularity in AI Shows Up in Token Spending Too
"Ramp data show that 80% of the top 1% of AI spenders are VC-backed, compared with only 13% of the median spender, suggesting that the circularity seen among AI hyperscalers and model providers also extends to token spending, as the startups buying the most compute are paying for it with venture capital rather than organic earnings, see chart below.
If the AI payoff is slow to materialize or never arrives, VC returns would come under pressure, since the capital funding today’s token spending would have little to show for it, and a pullback in venture funding could in turn weaken demand for compute." Apollo

AI - the next wave of American imperialism.
Google felled an estimated 250,000 to 400,000 trees in Finland for planned AI data centers, through its Finnish subsidiary Tuike Finland.

there's evidence that the use of AI in schools is delivering the opposite of "intellectual flourishing"—maybe in some bubbles the use of these models is leading to more reading and philosophical debates but I'm inclined to think that's an exception to the rule

I'd prefer publishers focused on literary qualty, not politics, because they are mostly bad at the latter, better at the former. A huge % of excellent writers historically are not on or of the left, and I don't know why we'd want or expect them to be.
