Former President Barack Obama accused Jews of unjustly taking land from Palestinians during remarks in Northern Ireland on Tuesday, promoting an antizionist distortion of Israelâs history that ignores decades of legal land purchases from wealthy Arab property owners. British government records show Jewish buyers paid Arab landowners the equivalent of roughly $510 million in just three years before Israelâs founding, usually at exorbitant prices.
âWhat is also undeniable is that they took land off people and they were excessive. And those people understandably said, âThis is injustice and I want my land back,ââ Obama said.
The former president made the ahistorical claims on October 13 during a public talk with journalist Susan McKay at The O2 Belfast, an arena in Northern Ireland. Earlier that day, he received an honorary doctorate from Queenâs University Belfast.

Our leaders, especially former presidents, need to lead by example.
First, Mamdani's interest in socialism comes from his ultimate goal of erasing Israel and the Jewish presence in the Middle East. He has been extremely clear about this, as has his wife, who as recently as two years ago publicly supported Hamas following the deadliest massacre of Jews since the Holocaust.
Second, in championing universal Pre-K, Obama could have appeared with any Democratic mayor or governor in the country; but he chose Mamdani, a man who is undoubtedly antisemitic and has yet to say, unequivocally, that calling for the genocide of Jews, which he has done before, is wrong.
