Author of “The Yahoo Boys: Love, Deception, and the Real Lives of Nigeria's Romance Scammers” @CarlosBarraganT immersed himself in the lives of four modern romance scammers in a neighborhood in Lagos to find out why they take advantage of victims.
Carlos' mom ten years ago was trying to find a partner online after he told her that she should try a dating app. And after she met an American soldier called Brian, she fell in love. But Brian was, as later discovered, not an American soldier based in Syria, but actually a Nigerian scammer who was trying to lure in the woman so he could get some money.
After a few years of seeing his mom struggling with loneliness, Carlos traveled to Nigeria trying to find Brian. Read more about what he found: occrp.org/en/feature/five-qu…

Ponzi scammer turned "king" Noah Musingku has reportedly died in Bougainville, Papua New Guinea.
Just two years ago his cult followers were telling me he would reign for a thousand years after making them all trillionaires.
This guy went from running a massive pyramid fraud in the 1990s to establishing his own self-styled kingdom at the center of a remote, war-ravaged Pacific island.
He set up his own banks and printed his own money, and built a devoted following among Western conspiracy theorists and "sovereign citizens".
In the U.S. alone, millions of dollars were lost in frauds linked to Musingku's currency.
One of the only people to put anyone behind bars for it was Rob Sand (@RobSandIA) — then an Iowa prosecutor who is heavy favorite to be elected as the state's Democratic governor next month.
