"I may be a hypocrite, but that doesn't make me wrong about you." A good friend once said that to me, and I've never forgotten how true down into my bones I felt it.

A great achievement is to build something that can outperform you. A tool, successor, system, etc. Increasingly, I think humanity might have done it again; for the last time. Or, we might merge with AI like mitochondria did with us long ago.
It seems very likely that humans will never again lead the frontier of understanding the universe.

The Asian belief that you take care of your kids so that when they're grown they can take care of you, coupled with grandparents helping out around the house, and minding kids continues to seem like the best model for the most people.
None of this is funny, but, the current state of boomers as they age is about to seriously shut up every single person claiming the “childless are selfish.” SO dramatically wrong and it will be amusing to some degree to watch reality set in.

"Roll up that map of Europe, it will not be wanted these 10 years." William Pitt upon hearing news of Napoleon's masterful victory at Austerlitz. Mr. Pitt wasn't wrong. Map created on Claude.

"Did the reasoning lead to the conclusion, or did the conclusion hire the reasoning?” It's can be incredibly challenging to let some conclusions go, and let reason guide you to a new one.
AI can give you twenty pages defending one side, then twenty more defending the opposite side. So the real question was never: How good is the argument? It is: “Did the reasoning lead to the conclusion, or did the conclusion hire the reasoning?” ״צַדִּיק הָרִאשׁוֹן בְּרִיבוֹ וּבָא רֵעֵהוּ וַחֲקָרוֹ״ The first case always sounds convincing until another side examines it. Intelligence can defend almost anything. Wisdom is knowing when you’re actually looking for truth. ✨ Support the mission → rivnitz.com/donate?utm_sourc…

Colonialism and mercantilism are a failure. Anyway, here's how I'd distribute all the wealth it produced.
Socialists be like: “Capitalism is a failure. Anyway, here’s how I’d distribute all the wealth it produced.”

I think this is correct, especially if taking Taiwan goes well, or if civil unrest suddenly rises.
Palmer Luckey warns China won’t stop at Taiwan… and believes Beijing is already building a historical narrative to justify territorial claims over Okinawa, the Philippines, and other Pacific territories. 🇺🇸🇨🇳🇹🇼🇯🇵 “This is my crazy theory, and people can disagree with me. But nobody in history has ever built a gigantic amphibious landing force, used it once, and then dismantled it—except for the United States. If China takes Taiwan, I think they’re immediately going to hop over to Okinawa, parts of the Philippines, and maybe parts of Vietnam as well. Xi Jinping has been talking about the Ryukyu Islands, where Okinawa is located, and historical tributary relationships with China. They’re not bringing up ancient history just because they love wandering through national archives looking at obscure tributary states. They’re constructing a national narrative that would allow them to convince their people to start with Taiwan—and then go after more of America’s Pacific allies.”

We're going to get roving bands of rogue uber hounds killing people unlucky enough to be caught out of doors at night. Ravaging and slaughtering unchallenged and unchecked. These bad boys.

My 2YO, I'd swear, was waiting for me to leave the room so she could do only things that weren't allowed. I thought I was paranoid accusing a 2YO of being deliberately naughty at such a young age. It only got worse from there. She's a 2E kid, and inevitably she'll surpass me.

My main takeaway from this is that women are still human, and like men drive towards the fringes of ideologies until somebody takes away the keys.
"Call Her Daddy" host Alex Cooper & actress Sophia Bush: if a woman is questioning whether she can do better than her current husband, "the answer is always yes." "This idea that it's too late or you're too old, or who are you to want more, that's patriarchy. That is crazy."

Churchill could have shortened WW2 by years if he had just “done a deal” with Hitler. George Washington could have done a deal to end the American Revolution. Zelenskyy is in good company.

Women have the right to vote and they secured it for themselves. So why doesn't that count as seizing power to him? Even worse, having seized that power he is unconvinced, why does he think women would somehow act differently if he was successful in taking their votes away.

"Only high-testosterone, high-IQ heterosexual males speak and act as a result of their mental model of the system as a whole. Everyone else just says and does whatever they think will keep them safe, and maybe get them a pat on the head." These are the types of absolutist statements commonly written by people reliant on audience capture for a given trend. It's not the type of thing that someone sophiscated enough to write Theft of Fire would likely write. If anything, it comes off as emotional and defensive. A classic but tragic trend is to start with reasonable/broad statements and then shift toward more absolutist/narrow statements over time, which happens either because 1) someone is trying to corral people (a demagogue) or 2) because someone needs the money (which shouldn't inform their art, but does, which is an age-old issue with artists). I'm looking forward to your next book and would encourage resistance against such banal and well-telegraphed failure modes that this type of direction tends to lead toward.

I occasionally find myself blocked by people who I would have expected we agree on a great many things. Would love to know what did it, yet it's impossible to ask. So it becomes a good exercise for learning acceptance.

Oof. A lot of that is I think exactly right, but it was shocking to see an AI hit a human with it.

There is no afterlife, no cosmic justice, and no inherent purpose. Consciousness ends at death in an indifferent universe that will outlast every human concern.

This was harrowing, but I still think Farewell My Concubine is the single most unrelentingly sad film ever made.
What is the greatest film you will never watch again?
