Jacinta Amei, 28, nearly lost her life to postpartum haemorrhage after delivering premature twins through a caesarean section at a Nairobi hospital. As she struggled to recover, severe bleeding left her short of essential maternity supplies.
Prof Obimbo warns that secondary postpartum haemorrhage can be particularly dangerous because it may occur after a mother has been discharged, making it harder to recognise abnormal bleeding.

🎉 A Powerful Close to a Landmark Conference
The Inaugural PPH Conference 2026 officially came to a close with inspiring closing remarks from Dr. Edward Serem, Head of RMNCAH, who reaffirmed the collective commitment to ending preventable maternal deaths and advancing quality maternal healthcare across Africa.
Dr. Serem applauded the dedication of healthcare professionals, researchers, innovators, policymakers, partners, and advocates whose contributions over the past two days have strengthened the movement to prevent postpartum haemorrhage. He emphasized that the conversations, innovations, partnerships, and commitments forged during the conference must now translate into action that reaches every health facility and every community.
As we conclude this inaugural conference, we leave with renewed purpose, stronger collaborations, and a shared vision: a future where no woman dies while giving life.
Thank you to every speaker, delegate, exhibitor, partner, sponsor, volunteer, and participant for making this historic conference a resounding success. This may be the end of the conference, but it is only the beginning of an even stronger movement to end postpartum haemorrhage.
Together, we will continue to stop the bleed and save mothers.

Moving from guidelines to active solutions for our mothers and communities
A woman suffering severe postpartum haemorrhage can bleed to death within just 10 to 15 minutes if she does not receive immediate treatment.
For thousands of mothers, those few minutes determine whether they will watch their newborn grow up or become another preventable maternal death statistic.
Yet one of the biggest obstacles to saving these women is not a lack of medical expertise but something far more basic: access to safe blood.
According to Professor Moses Obimbo, Project Lead of the National Postpartum Haemorrhage (NPPH) Initiative and the PPH Foundation, between two and four out of every 10 women who die from severe bleeding after childbirth lose their lives because blood for an emergency transfusion is either unavailable or cannot be accessed in time.
