Just to clarify a little on this debate, authors who have or haven’t published yet: readers CAN download privately and have always been able to do so directly from Ao3, that shouldn’t be any issue at all. ->

fichub is no longer turning ao3 fics into epubs bc the writers went in there threatening to throw lawyers at the one (1) person running the site you can notttt make this shit up

The problem comes when readers want to start publishing the fics themselves to other platforms without the authors consent. It’s simple etiquette to ask an artist what they want to do with their work. Being mad att readers for downloading the fics PRIVATELY is not it 😐

This whole google drive drama wouldn’t even have been this big if readers had just ASKED fanfic writers to upload their fics themselves. I’m sure many would have done it and even if they didn’t they were respected enough to be asked what they wanted to do with THEIR work.

ppl on bringing up the ao3 download button to make authors look stupid when in reality the overwhelming majority of writers are talking about uploading fics to the google drive without permission and i think it actually says a lot that you need to twist the narrative so much
