🚨 NEW ANALYSIS: Was a former Palestinian Authority minister unknowingly used in Sinwar’s October 7 deception? A new Jerusalem Center for Security and Foreign Affairs, @jerusalemcenter, analysis says Hamas maintained a secret channel with Israel through former PA minister Sufian Abu Zaida, creating the impression that Sinwar was pursuing a prisoner deal and economic arrangements with Israel. A further meeting with Sinwar was scheduled for October 8, 2023 — one day after the massacre. They argue that the planned meeting may have helped reinforce the Israeli assessment that Sinwar still wanted “calm,” even as Hamas secretly prepared its attack. The filmmakers Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor received a 25-minute virtue-signaling standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival for a film slandering the IDF. Produced by The Guardian, the film took the name from NAZA, a military acronym derived from the Hebrew term nezek agavi, and which is used by IDF to indicate the number of civilians expected to be killed in an airstrike as collateral damage when carrying out strikes against legitimate military targets. Such target-validation processes are carried out by any professional army which wants to minimize civilians casualties and assess incidental harm. The Islamist terrorist organization Hamas operates under completely different standard. They actively target civilians, which they made abundantly clear when they massacred 344 civilians at the Nova Music Festival and kidnapped more than 220 civilians during the October 7th Massacre which started the Israel-Hamas War. The methods and goal of Hamas are something that the filmmakers of NAZA consider unimportant and they also ignore the suffering of Israeli civilians targeted in the October 7th Massacre, such as Shiri Bibas and her two young sons, Ariel and Kfir, who were kidnapped from their home in Nir Oz and taken into Gaza. Ariel was just 4 years old while Kfir hadn’t even had the chance to celebrate his first birthday. They were all murdered in captivity. While IDF soldiers risked their lives in an effort to keep civilian casualties down in Gaza, Hamas did everything they could to maximize civilian casualties in Israel. These are facts that the filmmakers are happy to ignore in order to be able to receive international applause at film festivals for a narrative that places Israel and its soldiers in the role of the perpetrators, while the atrocities that began started war are pushed further and further into the background. Iran’s Energy Crisis Is Political, Not Seasonal Sogand Sara Fakheri @sogandsf, Head of the Iran Desk at the Jerusalem Center for Security and Foreign Affairs, writes in a special analysis for *Iran International* that the power outages and water shortages affecting millions of Iranians are not simply the result of extreme summer heat or the war. They are the product of years of neglect, deteriorating infrastructure, and systemic mismanagement. “A family can turn off a light. It cannot modernize a power plant. A parent can shorten a child’s shower. She cannot repair a leaking municipal water network.” Fakheri highlights the stark contradiction at the heart of the crisis: a country with some of the world’s largest oil and natural gas reserves cannot reliably provide its citizens with electricity and water. The war has made the situation worse, she argues, but it did not create it. “Iran did not run out of intelligence, resources or human ability. Its people were deprived of functioning systems because those in power failed to build and maintain them.” Now, she concludes, “the lights are going out, the taps are running dry, and ordinary Iranians are once again being asked to bear the cost.”

Why is Pakistan suddenly emerging as the only country trusted by both the U.S. and Iran to help broker peace? @BaligSladeen explains how Cold War alliances, Iran’s diplomatic reliance on Pakistan since 1979, China’s regional ambitions, and personal ties between Pakistan’s military leadership and Donald Trump turned Islamabad into an unlikely geopolitical power broker.

Mossad Calls on Iranians to Help Target the Regime Former Mossad chief and JCFA researcher, Oded Ailam, says the Mossad’s public appeal to Iranians is part of an effort to turn public anger against the regime into actionable intelligence. “This is not a textbook intelligence operation,” he said. “It’s out-of-the-box thinking built on the deep resentment of much of Iranian society toward the regime.” According to Ailam, the goal is to help identify Basij and IRGC positions embedded inside civilian areas in order to improve precision targeting. He added that years of economic collapse, repression, and the January massacres made intelligence penetration inside Iran significantly easier than in the past.

Iran’s Regime Is Eroding from Within Oded Ailam, former head of the Mossad’s Counter-Terrorism Division, warned that the collapse of the Iranian regime will not happen overnight or through a dramatic rebel march on Tehran. “This will not be a Jolani-style takeover with pickup trucks entering the capital,” he said. “We are talking about a huge country of 90 million people with deep ideological and security structures.” Still, Ailam believes the regime is entering a historic process of erosion. According to him, the combination of economic catastrophe, military pressure, and the loss of legitimacy among nearly 80% of the Iranian public could eventually lead either to mass unrest or internal fractures within the regime itself. He added that intelligence services are likely already in contact with figures inside the Iranian system.

Hamas Rebuilt Under the Ceasefire JCFA Senior Researcher, Lt. Col. (res.) Adv. @MauriceHirsch4, warns that Hamas has used the ceasefire period not for peace, but to rebuild its power in Gaza. According to Hirsch, the organization has tightened its grip on civilians by controlling humanitarian aid, eliminating suspected “collaborators,” and reestablishing itself as the governing authority in the Strip. “They are enforcing their rule in the streets while the population becomes completely dependent on them,” he says. At the same time, Hirsch explains, Hamas has been reorganizing militarily: recruiting new fighters, recovering weapons from surviving tunnels, and rebuilding its combat structure. “They are regrouping both as a fighting force and as a governing force,” he says, warning that Hamas continues to reject every proposal involving disarmament while positioning itself for the next round of conflict.

Hamas Refuses to Disarm as Qatar and Turkey Fail to Deliver JCFA Senior Researcher, Lt. Col. (res.) Adv. @MauriceHirsch4, says the international effort to pressure Hamas has collapsed because the very countries expected to influence the terror group continue protecting it. According to Hirsch, Qatar and Turkey were supposed to use their leverage over Hamas, but “both have failed completely.” Qatar, he notes, still allows Hamas offices to operate openly, while Turkey continues providing safe haven and financial support to Hamas leadership. Hirsch warns that the latest proposals for Gaza governance risk repeating the same mistake. Instead of full disarmament, new discussions focus on Hamas giving up control only in certain areas while remaining armed elsewhere. “Hamas keeps saying clearly: we will never give up our weapons,” Hirsch explains. “And when they speak about ending the occupation, they do not mean Gaza. They mean they will not stop until Israel itself surrenders.”

Iran Expert: “The Ayatollah Regime Will Fall Before the End of Trump’s Term” Sagiv Asulin, former senior Mossad official and current researcher at the Jerusalem Center for Security and Foreign Affairs (JCFA), estimates that the Iranian regime will not survive in the long run: “The Ayatollah regime will fall before the end of Trump’s term, but this is a long process, not something that will happen within months.” According to him, Israel is in a far stronger position today thanks to the joint pressure campaign with the United States, but warns against the illusion that there are “moderates” in Tehran. According to Asulin, any agreement with the current regime would be bad for Israel: “There is no real difference between Pezeshkian and the heads of the Revolutionary Guards. It’s the same ideology with different tactics.” He argues that continued sanctions and economic pressure are preferable at this stage to immediate military action: “Every additional day of pressure weakens the regime even further.”

What do Israelis really think about Iran? @sogandsf, Iran analyst at the JCFA, went to the streets of Tel Aviv to ask Israelis directly. As an Iranian Israeli, this conversation is personal. It’s about identity, and the complicated reality between two peoples who often know each other only through headlines. Watch until the end, and tell us: What question should we ask next?
