Why the Binance Hack Is Not as Dramatic for the Crypto Market Compared to the FTX Collapse
In November 2022, the total crypto market cap stood at only about $750–800 billion during the FTX collapse, with $BTC and $ETH already deep in a brutal bear market. Today, at the end of October 2026, it is around $2.6 trillion — more than three times larger, driven largely by $BTC and $ETH. The FTX hole of $8–9 billion represented roughly 1–1.2% of the total market at the time. The current Binance hack of $6.3 billion accounts for only about 0.24%. Relatively speaking, the damage is significantly smaller. At FTX, customer funds were missing due to fraud and insolvency, while holdings like $SOL later appreciated sharply and helped the recovery. At Binance the assets were simply stolen, but the exchange is covering the loss itself. Therefore, there is no real insolvency fear and the market is reacting more calmly. The quick announcement of coverage and the freezing of around $3 billion further limited the panic. Overall, the Binance hack is large in absolute terms, but relative to the market — and especially to major assets like $BTC, $ETH, and $SOL — it is far less dramatic than FTX.
