Fantastic read by @OnlyCFO this morning
I built a month-end close tool for myself so I could learn more about AI.
And then some friends productionized it.
Would have taken a team and months of work a few years ago…Go build stuff.
It’s free > goclose.com
Also added a library of finance skills.
Board members are supposed to be fiduciaries, but many don’t even know what that means.
With great power comes great responsibility….and great potential liability

great @OnlyCFO post on how vertical AI agents can strategically expand, or intentionally compress, gross margins, through the lens of Harvey vs. Legora
onlycfo.io/p/harvey-vs-legor…
When are terrible gross margins OK?
Many companies justify their terrible unit economics because they are growing fast, but not all terrible unit economics are created equal...

Who are the 10 highest paid people at your company?
If sales reps aren’t the highest paid people at your company (on a cash-basis), then there is a problem.
And every executive should be cheering when sales reps make more than they do…see why 👇

I learn by doing so I have been building with AI
I built something I would actually use (and that didn't seem too hard)...a month-end close tool. Some learnings:
1. 95%+ of companies won't/shouldn't vibecode important internal tools (at least yet...). Especially if fast growing or have decent scale.
2. The main exception to #1 is if customization is important to making you move faster or more efficiently. Endless customization can open up a lot of possibilities.
3. Cost alone is rarely a good reason to vibecode and will become an increasingly bad reason as competition heats up and pricing pressure continues.
4. When the person who vibecoded an app leaves the company, no one wants to maintain the monster they built. (TRUST me)
5. IT/engineering will be massively slowed down by putting out vibecoded fires
Having said all the above, building stuff (Skills, small apps, artifacts, agents, grokbots, etc) is the best way to understand AI and has made me a better finance leader.
A few friends and I built the below👇. A month-end close tool. Checklist, reconciliations, and a bunch of useful pre-built AI Skills. Will be adding a ton more soon. Try it out!

Sales tax on software is coming to California.
1. All your CA-based customers are getting an unexpected 8-10% price increase (the sales tax rate)
2. If you are based in CA, then all your software spend may increase by 8-10%
Here are some things I am doing:
-Reviewing all my CA-based customers and potentially waiving standard annual price increases
-Get sales/CS involved early to let them know and say how we are being nice and waiving price increases
-Get set up to collect the sales tax so we don’t end up with a huge liability
-Updating expense forecasts for 2027
-Potentially updating churn assumptions for CA-based customers
-Potentially do early contract renewals and ask the vendor to invoice us by the end of December so we can prepay and avoid sales tax for the term of the invoice (CA is still discussing how this change will be implemented but I assume this will work)
-Offer the above to all our CA-based customers (great for cash flow this year :)
-Look at “multiple points of use”. We all put CA because we had a HQ there and sales tax was zero…but now maybe we allocate to where usage actually happens?

“Ramping new reps is now an infrastructurevs. a talent question.
The old way of ramping a sales hire was a big PDF playbook, updated once annually at SKO.
The new model is a “living” system that rewrites itself based on the GTM data that’s changing every week. More “flywheel” than “process.” Which just couldn’t have existed 18 months ago.
The idea here:
Your top-performing reps at the front of the bell curve (above) often “work in the dark.” They have a gut-feel that drives them to make different decisions, and that judgment isn’t captured anywhere. So when they leave, that knowledge leaves too.”
I’m working on something adjacent to this personally and something right in the bullseye of this with a client right now.
One of the highest ROI employee benefits just went live.
Most companies should add a Trump Account contribution program to their benefits.
It’s a tax-advantaged way to help employees’ kids save for retirement and learn the importance of investing.

Coming soon to SaaS: sales tax?
(Is an obvious workaround to use AI generate a customer's application so that it's not pre-written?)

This post needs more love. This is getting to be a huge cost at companies and so much is 1) watching the dollars and 2) employee training

Many companies will be anxiously watching the Entrata IPO
With the rebound in public software and many eager to IPO, we are all hoping Entrata will be successful.
The metrics are good (not incredible) so if they can IPO then maybe many others can too!
