🍁what this means for regular Canadians:
If you're a Canadian business bidding on big federal contracts:
You get a real edge. On paper, your bid looks cheaper during evaluation than it actually is (the 10% credit), and using Canadian labour/materials/suppliers can earn you extra points or a further price advantage, depending on which scoring method the specific contract uses. Net effect: all else equal, a Canadian bidder should out-score a similar foreign bidder more often now than before.
If you're a foreign company bidding on the same contracts:
You're at a real disadvantage unless you also bring genuine Canadian content (local jobs, local manufacturing, local partners) into your bid. The policy is explicitly designed to make "just undercut on price" a weaker strategy against a Canadian competitor.
If you're a worker in one of the five strategic sectors (defence/security, health/pharma, infrastructure/construction/transportation, ICT, or industrial goods):
More federal dollars in your sector should flow toward companies that hire and build domestically, which in theory means more local jobs tied to these specific contracts over time.
If you're a smaller business, or bidding on smaller/non-strategic contracts:
This doesn't apply to you at all right now. It only kicks in at $5M+ and only in those five sectors, & most day-to-day government purchasing isn't touched by this policy.
If you're just a regular taxpayer:
The government's stated goal is that public money spent on big contracts does more to support Canadian jobs and companies rather than flowing out of the country ... particularly relevant given the ongoing US trade tension backdrop this policy emerged from.
*caveat: the policy's own definition of "Canadian supplier" is based on having a permanent, identifiable business presence in Canada (not necessarily majority-Canadian ownership). That's led to real criticism (PSPC officials confirmed in parliamentary testimony that a 100%-foreign-owned company with a Canadian storefront could technically qualify)

The name Lake Ontario comes from the Wendat word Ontari’io, which, appropriately, means “the lake is beautiful, the lake is big”.
The name is more than 400 years old, predating both the Confederation of Canada and the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America.
We know that America is changing. Their trading relationships, their foreign policies, their national monuments, their hydronyms.
Canadians also know that naming reality means calling it Lake Ontario – then, now and always.
