At the start of Black History Month, we’re celebrating the films of the great Clement Virgo.
Clement Virgo’s debut feature RUDE ( TIFF '95) drew on the filmmaker’s experiences growing up in Toronto’s Regent Park, and was the first Canadian dramatic feature to be written, produced, and directed by an all-Black team.
And after more than a decade of directing and producing television – including an award-winning miniseries adaptation of Lawrence Hill’s THE BOOK OF NEGROES – he returned to the big screen at TIFF '22 with BROTHER, his adaptation of David Chariandy’s novel.
