We discovered a sophisticated recording device that was hidden inside one of our offices. We used our models to understand the device and where it had come from, identifying that a specific employee had planted it a few days earlier. We referred the matter to the FBI, and we’re grateful to the agents and prosecutors who moved quickly to make an arrest. The FBI’s investigation is ongoing and we will continue to support their work. At this time, we have no indications of this individual inappropriately accessing or exfiltrating model weights, source code, or customer data. The employee was terminated. We take protecting our technology, data, and people seriously, and as a matter of national importance. Our security program is designed to protect against a wide range of threat actors, from insider risks to cybercriminals to nation states, and this case is an example of how AI can help address these sophisticated security threats.

A note from our research leaders: Last week we parted ways with Jasmine, Mikita, and Tomek after a thorough investigation found they violated clear policies on handling sensitive information. Our internal investigation uncovered a significant breach of trust beyond what’s outlined in the letter they published and we stand by the decision to not continue their employment. We generally keep individual employment matters private and don't believe a back and forth would be productive or lead to a resolution, but we want to address the points they raised in their letter directly. - We want to be very clear that these decisions were not about raising safety concerns or speaking out. Safety and research debates happen every day at OpenAI, often spirited and highly critical. We actively encourage these discussions and consider them essential to making the right decisions. We cannot do the work in front of us without a high degree of trust. We will continue to be extremely forgiving of our team making good-faith mistakes. We have not and do not terminate any of our employees for raising concerns. - We are actively finalizing contracts with third-party safety assessors and will announce details in the coming weeks. People across the company have been working really hard on getting these partnerships up and running. We are committed to embedding external assessors and continue to make close collaboration with independent safety organizations a core part of our safety work. Many of our researchers already work with 3p safety organizations productively. - We agree with the letter that preserving the monitorability of frontier models requires an industry-wide commitment, including from OpenAI. Monitorability has long been a core piece of our research program, and something we continue to invest significant resources in (see our publications on Monitoring Monitorability and the subsequent open sourcing of monitorability evals, our system card for GPT-6 Astra, Jakub’s blog and post on X, and the numerous blog posts on our Alignment blog on the topic). We are deeply sad about this outcome. We appreciated Jasmine, Mikita, and Tomek’s contributions to AI safety at OpenAI and their willingness to speak up and challenge ideas. We championed their voices, supported their work, and placed enormous trust in them. These decisions were not about them raising safety concerns. We have always encouraged that and always will.

OpenAI has entered into an agreement to utilize capacity at the PORTS-Pike Technology Data Center in Pike County, Ohio, working with SB Energy, NVIDIA, and the U.S. Department of Energy. Pike County helped power American industry in the last century. Here’s how we’ll ensure this project becomes a catalyst for future jobs, investment, and long-term opportunity in Southern Ohio. - SB Energy will pay the full cost of all grid upgrades and new transmission lines needed to serve the data center so the costs aren’t shifted to Ohio or other ratepayers in the region. - This data center will use closed-loop, air-cooled cooling systems that recirculate water rather than relying on cooling towers that continuously consume water. It is expected to use significantly less water than was historically used by the Portsmouth gaseous diffusion plant. - The project is expected to create 35,000 construction jobs during its six-year buildout through 2032 and 2,500 long-term operating jobs, with a focus on local workers, contractors, suppliers, trades, and service providers. - We will enable an initial combined community investment of $80 million: $40 million from OpenAI for priorities defined by the local community alongside SB Energy’s existing $40 million commitment. The project is also expected to generate hundreds of millions of dollars in state and local tax revenue over its lifetime, with local property taxes primarily supporting public schools. - OpenAI will make up to $84 million in Codex credits available to approximately 844,000 eligible Ohio college, community college, and technical school students aged 18 and older during the 2026–2027 academic year. - Each year, we will publish a report on our progress, and local input will help shape the Ohio Community Compact. openai.com/index/openai-join…

After Kiley was diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer, doctors told her she might have only months to live. At 18, she wrote a will, chose a casket, and began living scan to scan. But, over the next five years, she kept on living, defying expectations. Her scans stayed stable. Why? How? After a recent MRI, her husband @ColeLemasters used ChatGPT to help make sense of the dense language in her radiology report. That conversation led him back to Kiley’s original biopsy records, where ChatGPT helped surface a crucial detail: an IDH1 mutation. In partnership with her neuro-oncologist, he then confirmed what that meant. Under updated medical standards, Kiley’s tumor was not glioblastoma, but an IDH-mutant astrocytoma: still serious, but with a very different prognosis. Instead of bracing for the worst, Kiley and her doctors began focusing her treatment plan on long-term care. Now, after years of uncertainty, she and Cole are planning for a future.

We’re developing Project Camellia, a long-term AI infrastructure project in Effingham County, Georgia. There is significant work ahead. Here is the approach guiding that work: - Georgia families will not subsidize this project. OpenAI will pay all infrastructure and electric-service costs; Georgia PSC rules prohibit passing them to existing ratepayers. It will also be one of the first data centers designed to proactively reduce demand during grid stress. - The project is being designed with closed-loop cooling that recirculates water, similar to a car radiator. Once fully built, ongoing water use is expected to be comparable to a similar size office building. - The project is expected to create thousands of construction and permanent on-site jobs, generate hundreds of millions of dollars in state and local tax revenue, and prioritize local contractors and businesses. - OpenAI will provide $80 million in community benefits over the life of the project, shaped by local priorities, plus up to $71 million in Codex credits for eligible Georgia college, community college, and technical school students. - We’ve been meeting with state and local officials, community leaders, schools, and regional partners. A public open house this week and continued conversations will help shape how we benefit the community. An annual independent public audit will help hold the project accountable. openai.com/index/building-ai…

With nine kids and a no-screens rule on Sundays, Ben Kalkman wanted a project his whole family could build together: a new treehouse. Ben used ChatGPT as his construction consultant, helping Ben shape the structural design, source materials, and, crucially, translate his kids’ “wild ideas” into actual, buildable plans. Today, the treehouse is still evolving, and the family project keeps growing one Sunday - and one wild idea - at a time.

After Sekhar’s father developed frontal lobe dementia, he realized that could be him one day, and he didn’t want his own care to be a future burden for his husband Jim. With help from ChatGPT and Codex, he and founding volunteer Katie Brandt built Foreguard— a free tool that helps families claim public benefits they’re already entitled to, and plan ahead with private insurance including life, disability, and long-term care coverage tailored to their family history. On the planning side, Foreguard shows how even modest budgets of $100 a month can create millions of dollars of day-one financial protection. For Sekhar the goal is simple: help families prepare earlier, with more clarity, before care decisions become urgent.

For James Costello, demolition has always been about understanding how things come together before taking them apart. As a structural engineer overseeing some of New York City’s most complex high-rise demolition projects, he brings years of experience, precision, and problem-solving into every project. Beyond the skyline, James is also growing DEMTEC, a demolition business built from his family’s roots in the industry. But running a business means managing much more than what happens on site — from estimating and contracts to compliance documents and construction plans, there is an entire world of work behind every project. Today, James uses ChatGPT to help navigate that complexity. From reviewing lengthy contracts and identifying important details to organizing documentation and creating construction plans, ChatGPT helps him move through critical workflows faster and with more confidence. By combining decades of industry knowledge with new technology, James is creating more space to grow his business, support his team, and spend time with the people who matter most.
