In the weeks following 9/11, Marvel Comics turned to one of its most recognizable heroes to reflect on the attacks. This inked page from “The Amazing Spider-Man” Vol. 2, No. 36, published in 2001, is part of a story produced in just a few weeks and released by the end of the year. The issue was one of Marvel’s responses to 9/11, highlighting the heroism and sacrifice of emergency responders. Created by writer J. Michael Straczynski and artist John Romita, Jr., with inks by Scott Hanna, the issue captured the emotions of a city and country still grappling with the attacks. It is one example of how comic book creators responded to 9/11 in real time, using the medium to document, reflect and remember. The page is now on view in “Responding in Ink: Comic Books, Graphic Novels, and 9/11,” a new exhibition featuring approximately 50 works that explore how comics and graphic novels have responded to 9/11 and its aftermath. Access included in your 9/11 Memorial & Museum ticket. ow.ly/WxWR5103nzM © Marvel

Each year, the #NYCMarathon brings people together from around the world, filling New York City’s streets with determination, strength, and a shared sense of purpose. As runners make their way through the five boroughs, we remember those we lost on 9/11, including runners, neighbors, friends, and loved ones whose lives and legacies remain part of this city’s story. Twenty-five years later, their memory continues to move us forward. Today, we honor them and the enduring spirit of a city that continues to show up, stand together, and move forward. “Our Flag Was Still There” brings together a collection of American flags connected to 9/11 and the events that followed, including personal flags belonging to those who took part in the rescue and recovery efforts. The installation reflects on the meaning these flags have carried through moments of loss, service, and resilience, while inviting a new generation to consider what they represent today. As the United States marks 250 years of independence and the 25th anniversary of 9/11, these artifacts offer a powerful reminder of the role the American flag plays in our history. From the Collection: Locked to a street sign on Broadway near Cedar Street, a block from the World Trade Center, this abandoned bicycle soon became an impromptu shrine to the messengers and delivery persons presumed to have been killed on 9/11. Flowers, coins, notes, and religious items were left at the makeshift memorial in the months that followed. A tribute sign with a faded image of the Mexican flag on a piece of paper accompanied the bike. Below the flag is a bright green piece of paper with handwritten text: “In memory of the delivery boys who died | En memoria de los delivery boys que murieron | Sep 11 2001." Did you know the original World Trade Center had its own ZIP code? Before 9/11, the World Trade Center complex used ZIP code 10048, reflecting the scale of the buildings and the thousands of people who worked there. After the attacks, 10048 was withdrawn from use. The rebuilt World Trade Center site is now part of ZIP code 10007.

Thanks to Dr. Beth Hillman, President @Sept11Memorial for a very special evening. The next 9/11 will not look like the last one.  War is changing faster than ever. We cannot defend tomorrow with systems designed for yesterday. Drones, autonomy and AI make obtaining destructive power cheaper, smaller and available to almost anyone. The Ukraine War demonstrates that readiness requires speed. Test immediately. Dump what fails, improve what works. Scale and deploy immediately. Honoring those we lost on September 11 means having the imagination—and urgency—to prepare today for threats we know will be here. Honoring 9/11 means having the urgency to prepare today for the threats of tomorrow. @BillWhiteUSA  @USAmbToBelgium  @MattWhitaker46 @USAmbNATO @ElbridgeColby  #NeverForget
