Celebrating 60 Years of IEEE Photonics Society!
For six decades, the IEEE Photonics Society has been at the forefront of light-based innovation. To honor this incredible journey, we’re breaking down our history decade by decade—starting with the 1960s: The Foundations of Quantum Electronics.
The 1960s marked the birth of modern photonics! Key breakthroughs included:
🔹 Charles Kao’s revolutionary work on fiber optic communication
🔹 Theodore Maiman’s invention of the first laser
🔹 The first semiconductor laser demonstrations (now an @IEEEorg Milestone!)
🔹 The launch of the IEEE Journal of Quantum Electronics
📡 Even the Apollo 11 Lunar Laser Ranging Experiment in 1969 pushed the boundaries of light-based technology!
Join us each week as we explore the milestones that shaped our industry. Check out the full timeline here: ieeephotonics.org/about/60-y…
