20 years ago today Anna Politkovskaya, one of Russia’s most prominent investigative journalists, was murdered. I found no mention of the anniversary in today's Russian newspapers. #ReadingRussia

Yesterday Prime Minister Modi of India urged Vladimir Putin to move towards peace in Ukraine. What are today’s Russian newspapers saying about that? And how should we interpret the Kremlin leader’s response? #ReadingRussia

Today Moldova marks 35 years of independence.
Those who won it did their duty. Ours is to grow the country they created. We honour them, we celebrate what we have built together, and we keep walking firmly towards the European Union.

Why did the CIA director fly to Moscow? “There’s always a reason for a visit like this,” says the Russian government paper. But what is it? Different versions in today’s Russian papers. Plus, an editorial with a message…for Europe? #ReadingRussia

Sad to learn that Dolly Parton had died. What an artist, a total legend. Here’s my musical tribute to the Queen of Country.

In today’s Russian papers: a Putin decree, Russians “withdrew more cash than they deposited, praise for Marine Le Pen and a message for Andy Burnham: “He won’t see Moscow in his dreams. He should…in his nightmares.” #ReadingRussia

Spotted in a Russian newspaper: “The logic of this war is becoming more and more harsh: either they will destroy Russia, or we will crush them.” A week of petrol queues, growing geo-political tension & no end in sight to Russia’s war in Ukraine. #ReadingRussia

I was one of the first private bankers in post-Soviet Russia, and I am no longer sure the money Russians keep in banks today is anything more than digits on a screen.

35 years ago today, Estonia 🇪🇪 restored its independence.
Under the determined leadership of then-Foreign Minister Lennart Meri, Estonia’s foreign service quickly expanded our presence around the world, helping re-establish Estonia’s place in the international community.
Over three decades of persistent diplomacy, dedicated public service, and strong partnerships around the world, Estonia has shown remarkable courage in turning the promise of independence into a lasting achievement.
Here’s to making a free and democratic Estonia shine around the world for generations to come.

We know the value of freedom. Thank you to all our friends who stood with us when we restored ours and who have remained by our side over these years.
History reminds us: freedom is precious and strongest when defended together.
Happy Restoration of Independence Day! 🇪🇪

The very important thing to understand about these threats from the Kremlin is that their purpose is to generate headlines like this. Unable to coerce the UK govt directly, they aim to do it through scare headlines that shift public opinion.
Happy August! Do read this tremendous review by @JohnSimpsonNews in the @guardian of 'The August Coup' by RESC's own #Russia #USSR historian @robertservice00 :

A year ago, Ukraine seemed to have given up any realistic idea of winning Crimea back from Russia. Now, Ukraine’s drone campaign has forced Crimea to declare yet another state of emergency, and people queue for days to get petrol. Getting Crimea back isn’t unthinkable any more.

🇬🇧 PM Andy Burnham: Volodymyr, you're first leader I've welcomed in person since taking office, that's no accident.
It's intended to send very clear message: We're with Ukraine 100%.
I'm with you 100%, and I will honor every commitment this country has made to Ukraine in full.
I've worked closely with Ukrainian mayors in my former role over the last few years.
I've founded Unbroken Cities Network with mayor of Lviv, and heard directly from Ukrainian mayors what your country is going through.
British people feel that very deeply. We know your fight is vital for our security.
But this is also something that we feel in our gut. We do not like injustice in this country.
We don't like to see innocent people suffering. So we are with you. The whole country is with you.
