The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe has voted overwhelmingly in support of my proposals for tougher measures against Russia so its frozen assets - held by UK and EU banks - are used to compensate the victims of its violations in Ukraine and beyond.
Watch my interview to find out what I’m proposing.

After tonight's announcement of new US sanctions against the International Criminal Court, listen to these words from the ICC's Judge Rosario Salvatore Aitala, addressing PACE last week...
⭕️@PanmanTekke, rapporteur on Threats to the ICC is disappointed at the US administration’s sanctions against @IntlCrimCourt - a body that is vital in fighting impunity for crimes against humanity and war crimes. This is an attack on the international legal order.
🇰🇿@FrankSchwabe, PACE rapporteur on human rights in the North Caucasus, is deeply concerned at the risk that Mr Movlaev, a Chechen activist, could be extradited from Kazakhstan to Russia to face politically motivated persecution. Kazakh authorities should prevent his extradition.
🇲🇹@PACE_News rapporteur for ‘Justice delayed: the unfinished implementation of the Daphne Caruana Galizia case’, Baroness Shami Chakrabarti, issued the following statement on Malta’s plans for media reform 👇

🗣️ PACE’s General Rapporteur on the abolition of the death penalty @GalaVeldhoen expresses deep shock over the circumstances of the attempted execution of Christa Pike, who survived lethal injection after spending 30 years on death row. (🧵1/2)
Death is not justice. @GalaVeldhoen condemns this latest example of inhuman and cruel treatment. Sentenced to death for a crime committed when she was 18, Christa Pike would have become the first woman executed in Tennessee in more than 200 years.

Russia must be held accountable for its war against Ukraine.
Later this month I’ll ask the Assembly to agree to tougher, swifter action - so Russian sovereign assets can deliver the billions in compensation to victims ordered by the Court.
No more talk of legal complexity - we must get on with it so victims can get justice!
Glad to be working on this vitally important action, as a member of the UK Delegation to the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly, supported by the exceptional Council of Europe legal team.
Russian assets should be used to pay Ukraine potentially "billions" in compensation after Strasbourg Court #ECHR rulings, says the @PACE_LegalHR Committee.
