Murat Arslan, laureate of the 2017 #VaclavHavelPrize, is free after serving his full 10-year sentence. I wish him all the best as he reunites with his family. His commitment to an independent judiciary remains an inspiration.

A just peace is impossible without holding the aggressor accountable. This means not only punishment for crimes committed, but also compensation for the damage inflicted on Ukraine and its people.
This was the focus of my discussion with the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), @BayrPetra, during our meeting in Rome.
The Register of Damage Caused by russian Aggression is already operational. The next crucial step is to secure funding for the international compensation mechanism so that Ukrainians affected by russian aggression can receive fair compensation.
We also discussed further steps to hold russia accountable, including efforts to establish the Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine.
Another important topic was the return of Ukrainian children abducted by russia. This is a horrific crime that requires sustained international attention and concrete action. This issue must remain a priority for European parliaments.
Another area of cooperation is veterans’ policy. I firmly believe that veterans must be directly involved in making decisions that affect them. Their experience and voices are essential both to shaping national policies and to interparliamentary dialogue.
Peace must go hand in hand with justice, accountability for the aggressor, and the preservation of the democratic values that Ukraine defends every day.

“People sometimes pay with their lives for saying aloud what they think.“ The author of this quote, Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya, was assassinated on this day in 2006. PACE will continue to defend the work of journalists like Anna — they are the safeguards of democracy.
The ballot boxes have closed in Russia. But nothing genuine was decided. Fake elections produce a fake parliament.
There is no trust in this Potemkin Duma. But I believe in a future democratic peaceful Russia – and our doors remain open to all Russians who believe in it too.

25 years ago, terrorists attacked the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, and brought down a hijacked aircraft in Pennsylvania. Nearly 3000 people from around the world lost their lives. Today, we honour their memory and reaffirm our commitment to protecting the values we share.
A possible honorary funeral for Ratko Mladić, convicted of genocide, would be a matter of serious concern for Serbia’s commitment to the @CoE’s fundamental values.
I hope the Serbian authorities will reflect carefully on this and refrain from taking such a decision.

My deepest condolences to the people of Norway and to the Royal Family on the passing of King Harald V. For more than three decades, he served his country, Norway — a founding member of the Council of Europe — with dignity and devotion. My thoughts are with the Norwegian people.
Today, Ukraine celebrates 35 years of independence.
Ukraine's independence is not a memory to honour. It is a fact to defend. For four and a half years, Ukrainians have paid in blood for the right to determine their own future and in doing so, have defended the values 1/3
