PH CALLS FOR STRENGTHENED INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION TO PROTECT THE RIGHTS AND DIGNITY OF PEOPLE AFFECTED BY CLIMATE-RELATED MOBILITY
Speaking at the High-Level Breakfast for Climate Mobility Champions held at the sidelines of #UNGA81 High-Level Week 🇺🇳, Secretary Juan Miguel T. Cuna of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) 🇵🇭 acknowledged the role of the Global Principles for Climate Mobility in advancing a coherent, rights-based approach to climate mobility.
Secretary Cuna also emphasized that the Global Principles must progress from being a reactive and fragmented crisis response, to becoming a proactive and community-led pathway for climate mobility.
The Global Climate Mobility Principles, endorsed by several countries at the 2nd Berlin Climate Mobility Forum (BCMF) in June 2026, seeks to consolidate a rights-based framework concerning the displacement, migration, relocation, and immobility of people due to climate impacts.
The Global Principles highlights, among others, the need for locally-led adaptation and climate resilient infrastructure for communities exposed to climate risks, and ensuring financing that reaches communities directly.
The High-Level Breakfast, organized by Tuvalu, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Mauritania, and Nigeria, together with the Global Centre for Climate Mobility (GCCM) and the UN Office for Project Services (UNOPS), gathered government leaders and key stakeholders to discuss how the Global Principles can develop from being a political commitment into a concrete agenda for action.
