Every single person on and off stage and connected to @sigtheatre #MerrilyWeRollAlong fully understood the assignment. This is a well nigh perfect revival of one of Sondheim’s trickiest yet most rewarding shows. If you’re in the DC/Arlington area this is an absolute must-see.

I asked James Lapine this week about his working relationship with Stephen Sondheim, and what it means to see their work together still flourishing:
“I always feel like he’s sitting next to me. When he used to sit next to me at a show, he touched me sometimes when something was bad, or when something was good. He kind of grabbed me in those moments.
We’re very different people. I’m very understated, and he was very passionate. I don’t know how else to put it. Not that I’m not passionate… But he was voluble, I would say. It really is a marriage when you collaborate, particularly when it’s just two people. I think we were successful because we came from such different worlds. Twenty years’ difference in age. And Steve was always very brilliant and — how can I put it — methodical. And I’m a throw-up person. I just throw up and then I clean up my mess.
So we were a good combo because I was more improvisational, and I think we pulled each other together in the middle, if that makes sense. We met in a central place, and we each had the things that we did well that maybe the other one didn’t.
But I still feel like he’s sitting next to me. He’s sitting with me today.”

This week, it is an honor to welcome JAMES LAPINE to The Sondheim Hub.
Ahead of Into the Woods returning to the West End, we discussed how the show has changed for him over the years, the freedom he gives other artists to make it their own, and the continuing presence of Stephen Sondheim in his life…

In the New York Times, I ponder Jonathan Groff's evolution into a bona fide matinee idol. A very rare example of a nice guy finishing first.

“I am not hiding behind my canvas. I am living in it.”
The real Georges Seurat WAS living in his canvas, hidden from view for more than a century.
The vase of flowers below was once Seurat himself, at his easel. It would have been his only self-portrait. He painted over it.
