I’m trying something new: I’m launching a Substack to share my experiences covering lacrosse and some of the fun stories that just don’t fit in the articles I’m writing. It’s free, so please consider subscribing to The Takeaway Check.

“Defense is super rewarding.”
Lacrosse fans know Brennan O’Neill as an unstoppable force on offense. In his sixes debut, he also showed what he can do on the other end of the field, and he enjoyed it.
My story for @USALMag:

It took the USA some time to get going, but they eventually get a couple from Chad Palumbo in the final few minutes of the quarter to keep the game a four-score contest, 13-9.
Six goals from USA in the second quarter opens the gap a little. 11-7 at halftime. Joey Spallina and Matt Traynor are doing the heavy lifting in the box score.
Great sequence. Josh Yago slides on D to help Spallina. Croddick makes the save on the contested shot, and Yago gets out in transition, gets the clear from Croddick over the defense, and scores.
Youth players in the sidelines for USA men warmups couldn’t stop talking about Blaze Riorden. When he set up on the lefty wing, the kids yelled his name and got him to turn around, which got them even more excited.
Massive fourth quarter for the Haudenosaunee. They pull away, 18-14, thanks to a few goals from Jalyn Jimerson.
Haudenosaunee claw all the way back; it's now 13-13 heading into the final quarter. Should be a great ending.
I said it after the Atlas Cup last year, but I really like Sierra Cockerille's game. Great positioning, finishes, and rides hard.
Ireland women got up big on Haudenosaunee early, but the gap has closed, especially in this third quarter. What was once an 8-2 game is now 11-8.
AWESOME BTB from Ireland’s Patrick Corbett. This Ireland team definitely can score, and they do well to get out in transition. It’s a tie game in the second quarter.
I’m at the Atlas Cup at USA Lacrosse Headquarters. Canada vs Ireland early. Finn Thomson is incredible.
The Takeaway Check, Issue #139: @PTI celebrated its 25th anniversary this week. In college, I wrote about the show as the first post for the blog my teacher had us make for class. I was able to turn that blog into more professional opportunities.

He's one of the best goalies of his generation, but Blaze Riorden once again showed his versatility by scoring two goals and making five saves to help power the @USALMNT past Ireland at the Atlas Cup on Friday night. usalacrosse.com/magazine/bes…
