The solar eclipse prayer (Salāt al-Kusūf)
A solar eclipse is forecast to begin at approximately 6:17 pm this evening, lasting until around 8:06 pm. This rare event is not expected to be visible from the U.K. again until 2090.
Mosques across the U.K. will be conducting the Sunnah prayer in accordance with the sighting of the eclipse.
Whilst some hold the opinion that the prayer only takes place if the eclipse is sighted with the naked eye, many mosques have already announced and scheduled the prayer.
The Prophet ﷺ said: "The sun and the moon are two signs amongst the signs of Allah... So when you see them, invoke Allah and pray." — Sahih al-Bukhari.
⚠️ Warning: Do not look directly at the sun without appropriate eye protection, as this can cause permanent damage to your eyesight.

Andy Burnham is right, but we need to call this what it was: state-sanctioned vandalism.
The Conservatives systematically stripped sport, music, and drama from state school timetables, dismissing them as frivolous extras while preserving them for elite private schools. They treated working-class children as industrial units to be tested and processed, not young people who deserve a full, rich life.
The defense from the educational establishment was always economic efficiency. Teach the basics, pump up the league tables, ignore the rest. It was a narrow, philistine view of education that left an entire generation poorer for it.
Every child deserves access to sport, instruments, and the arts, not as a luxury, but as a birthright. If we only teach state school kids to read and count while private schools teach theirs to create, perform, and lead, we are simply baking inequality into the timetable.

In this blog post I look at one researchED session to ask how evidence-informed practice works rhetorically. My concern is not teachers sharing practice, but when practitioner testimony gains the aura of research evidence without a clear evidential chain.

BMJ (2007)- studied 1500 matches over a century, concluded a 2000m altitude difference worth a one goal headstart for home team, greatly increased chance of winning:
“The altitude difference between home and away teams
in international football games in South America sig-
nificantly affected the outcome of games. High altitude
home teams scored more and conceded fewer goals
when playing low altitude teams, and for each addi-
tional 1000 m of altitude difference the home team’s
score increased by about half a goal. In the case of
Bolivia playing against a sea level opponent such as
Brazil, the probability of a home win was effectively
increased from 0.537 to 0.825 because of altitude”

Two decades ago there were 40+ Theology & Religious Studies providers in UK universities. Today, that number has roughly halved, and Exeter University is considering cutting more.
@GLapshynov writes, this isn't a niche subject dying quietly - it's the erosion of our capacity to understand belief, culture and each other.

For example, suppose you could buy walk-up tickets without even specifying a date? With discounts for buying multiple? With online refunds any time if unused? You'd just need to activate a ticket before boarding a train, then it'd become non-refundable.
