Study Links Hippocampus to Control of Skilled Movements
Researchers have found that the hippocampus, known for its role in memory and spatial navigation, also plays a key part in controlling skilled movements like typing, handwriting, and playing music.
This challenges the previous understanding that motor skills were managed only by brain regions such as the basal ganglia and cerebellum.
Using fMRI scans, the study revealed that the hippocampus helps organize and retrieve movement sequences from memory, allowing for flexible control of skilled actions.
For example, it could predict the exact sequence of finger movements in a typing task.
These findings suggest that the hippocampus works closely with motor areas to perform complex motor tasks.
The research opens new possibilities for developing therapies to enhance motor function and rehabilitation in neurological disorders.
