In situ AFM measurements of ionic conductors can connect ion exchange with mechanical changes in electrode materials.
In this ๐ก๐ฎ๐๐๐ฟ๐ฒ ๐๐ผ๐บ๐บ๐๐ป๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป๐ ๐ฝ๐ฎ๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ฟ (okt.to/bWjp4T), the group of Prof. Tobias Cramer used modulated electrochemical AFM on a Park NX10 to map ion-driven swelling in organic mixed ionic-electronic channels. Tracking the amplitude and phase of these strain waves revealed how electrical signals propagate, which is insightful for bioelectronic and neuromorphic device design.
Explore the science behind these measurements with the paperโs corresponding author, Prof. Tobias Cramer, as guest speaker in our webinar on 2 December: โInvestigating mixed ionic-electronic conductors with electrochemical strain wave microscopy.โ

What happens when the angle between layers becomes a control parameter for electronic behaviour?
In a new ๐ก๐ฎ๐๐๐ฟ๐ฒ ๐ ๐ฎ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ฎ๐น๐ study, researchers show that anomalous gating in bilayer graphene/hBN heterostructures is governed by the relative alignment of the two hBN layers. To study this effect, the team precisely adjusted the device angle using AFM-guided mechanical manipulation and tracked how the electronic response changed.
Park FX40 supported this workflow through contact-mode manipulation, with room-temperature transport measurements performed inside the AFM.

Resolving 2D materials means capturing more than one length scale at once. In the image below, ๐ฃ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ธ ๐ก๐ซ๐ญ reveals twisted bilayer graphene on SiC with both the atomic honeycomb lattice and the longer-period moirรฉ superlattice visible in the same dataset.
The moirรฉ pattern shows a periodicity of ~1.5 nm, superimposed on the graphene lattice with its characteristic 2.46 ร
interatomic spacing. The FFT confirms both signals simultaneously: inner spots from the moirรฉ periodicity and outer hexagonal spots from the atomic lattice.
