ALT Greater Manchester Tenants’ Union recognises the excellent work that charity workers at Shelter provide to tenants and those at risk of eviction in the face of a brutal housing crisis created by government policy and inaction. We note the Unite members at Shelter have overwhelmingly voted in favour of strike action following a derisory pay offer from senior management. We acknowledge these workers' commitment to social justice and appreciate how difficult the decision to strike must have been for them given their commitment to defending against evictions, preventing homelessness, campaigning for policy change, and helping tenants understand their legal rights. We believe that both tenants and workers must demand change using any level of power they have available to them. As one worker at Shelter said: "At the very base level, absolute bare minimum, those working for a housing charity shouldn’t be experiencing housing insecurity as a result of being unable to pay rent.”
