Funnily enough, “yeah” is one of the oldest attested words in the English language. Bede records (writing in A.D. ~730) that a bishop healed a mute man by making the sign of the cross over his tongue and commanding him: “say something, say ‘ġǣ’” (the ancestor of ‘yeah’). We can’t be sure that it already had an informal connotation compared to ġīese (yes) by this time, but it’s interesting to see Bede translate the word with “etiam,” which seems to have been a more casual / colloquial ‘yes’ in Classical Latin.
