NCR just published this article I wrote about how the World Cup shows the power of sports to foster encounter. In addition to my own reflections, you will find insights from Pope Leo's recent Apostolic Letter on sport, "Life in Abundance". @d_c_ed

In our competitive society, where it seems that only the strong and winners deserve to live, sport also teaches us how to lose. It forces us, in learning the art of losing, to confront our fragility, our limitations and our imperfections. It is through the experience of these limits that we open our hearts to hope. Athletes who never make mistakes, who never lose, do not exist.
Very grateful to meet Pope Leo today at his audience at Jubilee of Sport. It was lovely to speak to the pope in English ... w/ Midwestern accents! He said his uncle taught at U of Detroit for many years. @MidwestJesuits @detroitmercy @Creighton @jesuitcolleges @jesuitschools
So grateful to President Hendrickson for this invitation to be the Heider Chair @Creighton and to everyone at the university who has been so welcoming! I look forward to joining you soon! creighton.edu/news/new-holde… @jesuitcolleges @MidwestJesuits @sport4humanity @BIGEAST @d_c_ed
Here is great resource for getting to know Pope Leo. When asked for story about Pope Francis he said "The best stories I can't tell here. But maybe if you catch me in the parking lot." :) Interview starts 11:00 youtube.com/watch?v=9U3yBFdt… @JamesMartinSJ @antoniospadaro #PopeLeoXIV
It was a real blessing to concelebrate at Pope Leo’s Inauguration Mass for his papacy! In his homily he highlighted that Catholics are all "called through our baptism to build God’s house in fraternal communion, in the harmony of the Spirit, in the coexistence of diversity.”
It was wonderful to talk with Brian Bolt (Calvin Univeristy) and Chad Carlson (Hope College) about my faith journey, Jesuit life and how sports can be related to human and spiritual growth. @MidwestJesuits @jesuitcolleges @jesuitnews @jesuitschools sportfaithlife.com/
I arrived in Rome Wednesday evening. Last night I met with my nephew Seppe Kelly, a seminarian and student at the Pontifical Gregorian University, where I teach. It was great to hear how his first semester has been (wonderful, by the way :) and his interests in further studies.
