Referring to kudos, bookmarks and comments as the currency of fandom is so interesting to me. You're not being paid - in any form. Capitalism has rotten your brains. You are being appreciated and complimented. Those are NOT payments for your labour. Your work is not a product.

And if you're entitled to a comment and engagement, am I entitled to a response or is that engagement a one way street?? Cause if I say y'all don't even respond to these comments you're demanding, y'all are gonna call me everything but a child of God. YET -

So I must be polite to thank you for your work and compliment you but you don't need to have the manners to respond and say thank you? Do you see how ridiculous we both sound?

Girl i used to write scripts in audio porn spaces. I've written fics & stories on various platforms over the years. Y'all are whiny, praise hungry and entitled as fuck. Everybody entitled in this bitch it seems.

Y'all love saying this like you dont know how conversations work on twitter. Lol okay.

In favour of your own grudges. A very weird behavior if you ask me, because you are taking a comment not directed at you (as you seem to say you do all the appreciation for writers) and getting angry because you decided it had your name and it was a direct insult to you

See this is what I mean, "who do stuff for you," Some of you act like service provides who didn't payment instead of fanfic writers. Write for YOU. Create your art FOR YOU. You're not a service provider.

my critique i've been having while reading a lot of recently released queer books is i want authors to understand that just because your main couple are queer that doesn't make them interesting or that they automatically have chemistry. you still have to develop that lol

Entitled to comments. Entitled to kudos. Only read per these author specific T&Cs that aren't ao3s T&Cs but I'm entitled cause I have fics downloaded? Bet bet bet. "Praise us always or we'll stop writing," Stop. You're in it for clout. You can stop.

Me: this is frustrating for readers. Y'all: well imagine how frustrating this other thing is for writers! Why is your frustration more valid than anyone else in this space? Why can't we have frustrations we talk about? Oh we gotta shut up less we upset y'all? Sorry papa.

ao3 is build so you get you credit off bat. We're not entitled to fics & you're not entitled to kudos and comments. Both are lovely to have but neither are mandatory. You speak about readers so poorly yet want those same people to read your shit.

Every week you see people arguing people don’t write as much, that they don’t see long fics anymore, that a lot of authors disappear and don’t finish WIPs. And then turn right around and argue writers don’t deserve engagement or credit for months if not years of work.

It’s barely been one day of ao3 down and some of yall are already starting ridiculous discourse. Ppl downloading + sharing fics when the site is down is such a lovely example of community and is functioning exactly as ao3 intended: preserving access to fics.

Y'all are crashing out over people SEEKING OUT YOUR FICS SO THEY CAN READ THEM through a method the archive allows all because you may not get a comment or kudos from that session. I need you to be so freaking fucking for real right now. And we're entitled? Stop writing then.

ALSO people have the right to lurk. They have the right to read, enjoy something/not enjoy something and do absolutely nothing about that. You working touching them doesn't entitle you to their vulnerability in expressing that. Some of y'all are getting extremely egotistical.

There are plenty of writers whose DMs I have been in singing their praises and plenty I have not even though I love their work. It is up to ME and MY discretion if I want to engage. The same way its up to THEM and THEIR discretion if they want to write.

Y'all keep saying that readers treat fics like content but baby, YOU treat writing it like content creators dry begging for engagement on their partnered posts.

My opinion on people downloading fic is that: if they intended to give comments/kudos, they would find a way to do so before or after downloading the fic. Writers aren't missing out just bc someone downloaded it to their private archive

lot of ao3 writers are starting to sound like those authors that lose their mind over pirating

i keep seeing people referring to fic drives as work being shared without “reward” for the author and i have to be honest, it bothers me that people are posting on ao3 with their main motivation being recognition and reward. wanting comments and engagement is natural, but i think framing it as reward or a return for your work is kind of indicative that you don’t really understand why fanfiction exists to begin with. fanfiction exists as a way for authors to express themselves, explore characters and identities and try things out. it’s a creative outlet and you should be writing because you want to do it. not because you want the attention it brings. we lose the culture and motivation behind fandom practices when we commodify them.
Fic writers talking about “engagement” wtf are you on about
