Reproductive health is declining among Australian men with 1-in-20 experiencing reduced #Fertility. Researchers may have found the cause of this #Infertility may start in the womb

Sadly, there was a 10% reduction in overall number of applicants to the @NHMRC Investigator Grant scheme in 2022 cf.2021 & 10% fewer grants funded. The ASMR, supported by Affiliates and other key stakeholders in our sector, have published an Alliance letter.

“Basic” or “discovery” science helps us better understand how things work - and they also form the basis of future therapies and treatments. Sometimes the application of this research isn’t evident at first, and may be realised many years later, as knowledge + technology evolves
This 2018 study found that 80% of the “most transformative” medicines approved for clinical use by the FDA could be traced back to one or several basic discoveries, which occurred on average three decades before approval! science.org/doi/10.1126/scit…

Many research-intensive countries including 🇬🇧🇺🇸🇵🇹🇦🇹🇩🇪🇫🇷🇪🇸🇮🇪🇸🇪 have significantly increased💰into health & medical research in response to the pandemic
In Australia, funding flatlined, success rates dropped & the workforce is demoralised- we are falling behind on the world stage

To grow innovation in health & medical research in Australia the sector needs $$$
Innovation attracts private investment + economic growth.
Neglecting investment into discovery research funded by @NHMRC grants jeopardises future innovation & global competitiveness
