Called to Care: Dental Edition is officially a Best Seller!
I’m so grateful. To everyone who bought a copy, shared a post, or put this book in front of their team, a heartfelt thank you. The dental community showed up on launch day in a big way.
I wrote this book because caring doesn’t burn providers out. Caring without connection does. The fact that so many of you are picking it up tells me that message is landing, and that a lot of you are feeling it in your own practices.
We’re just getting started. If you lead a practice, a DSO, or a team of any kind, put this in your providers’ hands.

New episode. Amol Nirgudkar built Patient Prism to fix a problem hiding in plain sight: about half of new patient calls to a dental practice never end in a booked appointment. This episode is about what AI can teach us about empathy in the most human, least clinical moment in the entire patient journey: the first phone call.

Sometimes, one injury can change the direction of your entire career.
Heidi shares how a basketball injury at UC Davis introduced her to physical therapy and ultimately changed her path.
We discussed her journey on The Operator in celebration of the revised edition of Called to Care, with proceeds benefiting Rizing Tide Foundation.

A conclusion asks you to agree with me. A test asks you to find out. Nearly forty Operator essays since February, almost every one ending in a test. Now all twenty on one page. No consultant, no survey, no task force. Most take an afternoon. Twenty Tests Your Dashboard Can’t Run, by @PhysicalTherapy benzoperator.substack.com/p/…
Physical therapy has always been about more than getting someone back on their feet.
From treating soldiers who wanted to return to their units to caring for patients in Haiti, I've learned that human connection is at the heart of what we do.
I reflected on these experiences with Heidi on The Operator as we discussed the revised edition of Called to Care, with all proceeds benefiting Rizing Tide Foundation.

One week from today, Called to Care for Dental Professionals is out in the world 📚
I wrote this book for the hygienists, assistants, dentists, and DSO leaders who show up for patients every day, often at the expense of their own energy. Caring is not what burns providers out. Caring without connection is, and that is as true in the operatory as it is anywhere else in healthcare.
If you lead a dental team, consider putting this book in your providers' hands rather than just reading it yourself. Culture is infrastructure, and it's cheaper to build it before the crisis.

Mentorship goes far beyond clinical skills.
Heidi Jannenga shares how Rizing Tide Foundation supports future physical therapists as they navigate career demands, financial pressures, family responsibilities, and burnout.
We explored this on The Operator while discussing the revised edition of Called to Care, with proceeds benefiting Rizing Tide Foundation.

16 hours - I just finished recording the audio editions of Called to Care, including the full dental edition. Reading your own book out loud is humbling.
The hardest chapter to record was burnout. Caring is not what burns providers out. Caring without connection is. Audio editions of Called to Care are on the way.
Day 3 of recording. My voice is shot, my water bottle is empty, and the dental edition of Called to Care is officially in books!
A 2023 study of 975 physical therapists and assistants found that simply having a productivity requirement, any requirement, predicted lower engagement and higher intent to leave. Called to Care, 2nd Edition hit #1 on Amazon, which is a testament to the mission: this book argues that connection is protective, not depleting, that caring without connection is what actually burns providers out, and that culture is infrastructure you build before the crisis, not a rescue plan after. If that idea reached even one more person this week, that's the real win.
Thank you to everyone who bought, reviewed, or shared this book with someone in your life. Also, a big thank you to @ScribeMediaco for getting this into the world. 100% of book profits go to Rizing Tide Foundation, so every copy does double duty.

Taylor Swift released a song this week called "Patient Zero." It's about warning someone that an ex is toxic, using this whole contagion metaphor: she was infected first; now she's passing on the warning.
Not exactly healthcare content...but every care team has a patient zero, in a sense. Not the very first patient they ever see or the first behavior modeled, the one everyone downstream absorbs without realizing it. Burnout spreads that way. So does compassion, if someone decides to go first.
I wrote about what that actually looks like, and why treating every patient like your first patient might be the most literal answer to the question the song accidentally raises.
