From his early years as a young performer to his rise as the King of Pop, his music continued to evolve, influencing popular culture, fashion, dance and the global music industry.
His solo career produced some of the most recognizable albums in music history. Forever, Michael (1975) reflected his transition toward adulthood after his success with the Jackson 5. Off the Wall (1979), produced largely with Quincy Jones, established him as a major solo star, blending disco, funk, soul and pop. Then came Thriller (1982), which became the best-selling album of all time and helped transform music videos into major cultural events. Songs such as "Billie Jean," "Beat It" and "Thriller" reached audiences around the world.
With Bad (1987), Jackson became the first artist to produce five number-one singles from one album on the Billboard Hot 100. Dangerous (1991) introduced a stronger new jack swing sound, while HIStory (1995) combined new recordings with a collection of his earlier hits. His final studio album released during his lifetime, Invincible (2001), explored contemporary R&B and pop production.
The final cover in this collection, This Is It, requires a distinction. Released in 2009, after Jackson's death, it was a soundtrack album associated with the concert film documenting preparations for his planned London comeback performances. It was not another studio album.
