ALT CHAPTER ONE The Caveat EARTH After the Rising, 334 The Spotters swept into the alleyway like sinister shadows that had left their hosts behind to go hunting. The trick to catching sight of them, barely visible as they were in their dark blue uniforms, was to track their weapons. The piercing hum of magic the guns emitted always gave them away. It wasn’t a sound meant for human ears. From where Thorn crouched behind a rubbish bin, its rancid stink making it difficult to focus, she could count ten Spotters at least. There were likely more searching adjacent streets and alleyways. Like mould, more Spotters always hid just out of sight. Squinting, head now splitting from the hum of magic, Thorn could just discern the chrome plates of the trackers on their forearms. The devices were capable of detecting human presence with magic. While the blockers she and Thistle wore on their wrists kept them from being discovered on radar, given how many Spotters there were, it wasn’t much of a comfort.
