As a cold front sinks across our area this afternoon, additional showers and thunderstorms are expected along and ahead. The best chance of damaging wind gusts lies south of I-70, but it cannot be ruled out as far north as Pittsburgh. Downpours and lightning are also threats.

7:15 PM: Storms have not been overly impressive thus far this afternoon, but we've had a few warnings and statements across western PA. The most concerning part of the line will be moving in from eastern Ohio and into the Pittsburgh region over the next 60 - 90 minutes. Watch for locally strong winds and heavy rainfall.

Significant rainfall from the severe thunderstorm has created flooding conditions and brought down trees and power lines in several areas of the city. Public Safety is standing up all of its assets in the event of high water rescues if needed. Motorists please avoid flooded roads - it only takes 12 inches of rushing water to carry away cars, double that amount, 24 inches, for trucks and SUVs. It is NEVER safe to walk or drive into flood waters. Please heed all road barriers as they are there for your safety. Turn around, don't drown!

The Flood Watch (in effect till 2pm) has been expanded to include Allegheny, Westmoreland, and Fayette counties in SW PA and Preston County in northern WV. Heavy rain in storms moving along a stalled boundary could lead to flooding of low-lying areas, rivers/creeks and roads.

There has been improvement in air quality in northeastern PA, into the Code Yellow (moderate) range on the Air Quality Index. The rest of Pennsylvania is still expected to have air quality concerns, and the Code Purple remains in effect through the rest of today, July 17. Tomorrow, expect a warm front to advance into PA from the south and west which will push the smoke northeast as the front tracks northeastward into Pennsylvania. Remember, Code Orange is still unhealthy for sensitive groups, so children, elderly and those with a respiratory condition should try to stay indoors yet on Saturday. And be sure to check your local air quality at airnow.gov Read more about this alert 👉bit.ly/4vEWkpo

Notice the sky is a little less blue? That's because smoke is being transported by winds aloft from wildfires in far northern MN into western Ontario. Smoke today remains mainly higher up in the sky, but smoke could reach the surface Thursday and increase air quality issues.
