I reviewed NY's data-center "moratorium" so you don't have to. The bottom line: it's not just a one-year delay for the biggest facilities. It's an open-ended mess that would create permanent obstacles for building even relatively small data processors. city-journal.org/article/new…

Tbf, paying a boatload for projects truly is part of the “historic character of the building”
I reached out to the NYS Office of General Services about the railings. They’re going up on the Senate and Assembly staircases, but NOT the Million Dollar Staircase. OGS cites safety reasons for installing them. Total cost: $700,000

It "sounds familiar" because it's a doctrine NYS pioneered under Gov. David Paterson in 2010.
Hmmm this sounds familiar 🤔

What happened to NY electricity prices after 2019?
Small businesses across New York City had to turn off their AC in 90-degree heat just to afford skyrocketing energy bills. New Yorkers are struggling because of Trump’s reckless war and costly tariffs.

I see a lot of people describing Social Security benefit cuts as "changing the bargain," but this is wrong. The rules that have been in place for decades explicitly require that benefits be cut to a level that can be paid with SS tax revenues once the trust fund runs out. The retirees calling for taxes to be raised above the tax rate that they paid on their own wages in order to avoid the legally mandated cuts are the ones trying to change the bargain for their own benefit.
Well, if you wanna change the bargain because it’s to your benefit, then I don’t think I’m going to feel very guilty about using my power to not let you do that. I don’t see you or your generation not wanting what security Social Security provides. When I see them is not wanting to pay their share of it, which means paying the previous generation. That doesn’t sound like a very good deal to me so we’re not going to do that. I am willing to listen to ideas that don’t involve me getting screwed and no one else.

Neat!
What happens when a blackout hits the Florida Keys? They have to do what grid operators call a black start. I recently visited the Keys Energy Generating Facility on Stock Island to see how they do it. As you’ll see in this five-minute mini-documentary, they start with a 2-megawatt diesel-fired engine and gradually add more capacity until they can fire up their large gas turbines. In all, the facility has 105 MW of capacity, all of which runs on diesel fuel. The power plant is owned by the Florida Municipal Power Agency and is operated by Keys Energy Services, a municipal utility which provides electricity to Key West and the lower Florida Keys. I love seeing big iron. I particularly like visiting power plants and seeing how they work. Many thanks to my good friend at FMPA, Jacob Williams, and to Lynne Tejada and Robbie Berger at Keys Energy for coordinating my visit. The claim that "property taxes mean you don't own your own home" has become ubiquitous in some conservative circles. The argument has been wildly successful despite being obviously incorrect. Me in @politico:

CT's employment data have been very noisy since COVID, with some big revisions. Tough to square the jump in unemployment with both private and nonfarm jobs growing faster than they were a year ago.

And don’t forget the original “Middle Class STAR” proptax rebate checks of 2008. A top priority of Senate Republicans, timed to hit mailboxes shortly before an election that produced … NY’s first Democratic state Senate majority in 42 years.
Replying to @PolicyEngineer
Pre-election rebate checks are an old, awful Albany tradition. From 1998, 2014 and 2026:

These checks from NYS aren't actually rebates. They're paid out of the general fund, not utility tax receipts or the state's energy funds. Even ignoring that, they could have been credited directly to customer accounts this summer...but there wasn't an election this summer.
So, I'm obviously voting for @GovKathyHochul. But gimmicky taxpayer rebates two weeks before an election are bad fiscal policy and shady politics. I'm taking suggestions here on what candidate I should send this $100 to.

New York is holding more than $2B in US Treasuries in its energy agency (NYSERDA) because for years it has taxed people and businesses faster than it could spend the proceeds. But that's not where these "rebates" are coming from.

New York will subsidize your natural gas purchase so you burn more but to fight climate change that natural gas must come from outside New York.
No family should have to worry about affording heat when the temperatures drop. Washington Republicans may be willing to leave New Yorkers out in the cold, but your family is my fight. Our Home Energy Assistance Program will help families pay their heating bills and keep their homes warm this winter. Applications open November 2: ny.gov/HEAP
