“I’m an American. I work for the Washington Post. My story’s getting a lot of attention around the world. Everyone wants to talk to me. But I can't imagine what it’s like for all of the victims that have gone through this same ordeal and are living with the threat of this violence on a daily basis,” journalist Heidi Levine, who was violently assaulted by Israeli settlers last week, told @CNN's @jaketapper.

CPJ submitted testimony to the @TLHumanRights ahead of its October 21 briefing on transnational networks fueling the war in Sudan, highlighting how foreign weapons, financing, personnel, and logistical support sustain armed actors responsible for killing, detaining, and otherwise targeting journalists.
The testimony calls on Congress to increase scrutiny of the transnational networks sustaining the conflict, strengthen oversight of arms transfers, pursue accountability for attacks on journalists, and support Sudanese journalists and independent media.

Thank you #PressFreedom advocate Sen. @ChrisVanHollen for calling for an end to Egypt’s assault on press freedom. Journalism is #NotACrime.
“Journalists must be able to document what happens around the country without fear. Their ability to do so is an essential part of a free and fair election.” — Attila Mong, @CPJ_Eurasia program coordinator
#Serbia 🇷🇸: CPJ calls on Serbian authorities to ensure that journalists can report safely throughout Sunday’s parliamentary election, and the period that follows.
During the election campaign, journalists have been pushed and hit by police officers, had phones seized or cameras struck, and been prevented from covering campaign events.
“The attacks we have seen during this election campaign are a warning of what could happen on October 25 and afterwards. Serbian authorities must ensure that police protect journalists rather than obstruct them and that local and international reporters can access election-related events. All reported attacks and irregularities must be promptly investigated,” said Attila Mong, CPJ’s Europe program coordinator.
"Journalists must be able to document what happens around the country without fear. Their ability to do so is an essential part of a free and fair election," Mong said.

Egypt’s crackdown on the press has spread fear through newsrooms in Egypt and among Egyptian journalists working for outlets based abroad. Egypt remains one of the world’s worst jailers of journalists, with at least 25 currently behind bars.

Egypt is weaponizing its media law to punish independent journalism and intensify one of its worst crackdowns on the press in years. It is long past time for Egypt to end this campaign against press freedom and allow independent media to report freely.
CPJ condemns the referral of @MadaMasr Editor-in-Chief Lina Attalah to trial for operating a website without a license that Egyptian authorities have themselves refused to grant for years. Egypt is weaponizing its media law to punish independent journalism and intensify one of its worst crackdowns on the press in years, which began with the arrest of six Matsdaash journalists. It is long past time for Egypt to end this campaign and allow independent media to report freely.
“It's difficult to get recent news, but really, very few foreign journalists can enter Eritrea. And in Eritrea, there are very few journalists because, literally … the entire independent press disappeared 25 years ago.”
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the silencing of independent Eritrean media and the arrest of some of the world’s longest-detained journalists, who CPJ is honoring at our 2026 International Press Freedom Awards.

CPJ has written to Israel’s ambassador to the U.S., Yechiel (Michael) Leiter, demanding a criminal investigation into October 16’s violent assault on Washington Post photographer Heidi Levine while covering the olive harvest in the occupied West Bank. Levine was assaulted by masked settlers despite wearing a clearly marked “Press” vest.

#France: Reports of journalists being attacked while covering protests in France at the weekend are alarming and authorities must hold all those responsible to account.
A @euronews crew reported being attacked by masked individuals with the cameraman punched and his camera stolen and then returned without its memory card. A team reporting for @CNEWS also reported being hit and attacked with bottles while masked individuals also attacked the @CNEWS offices.
Reporters must be able to work without violence, intimidation, or interference from police or protesters.

"Mada Masr's Editor-in-Chief Lina Attalah was summoned on Monday by Egypt's Supreme State Security Prosecution. In less than a month, Egyptian authorities have detained an entire newsroom, and summoned journalist Rasha Azab. CPJ is deeply concerned by this unprecedented crackdown on independent journalism. It must end immediately."

🧵 The Israeli settlers’ violent assault on American photojournalist and Washington Post contributor Heidi Levine on Oct. 16 follows a wave of similar incidents against Palestinian and foreign journalists in the occupied West Bank.
In the first eight months of 2026, Israeli settlers assaulted, harassed, or obstructed at least 35 journalists in the West Bank.
The Trump Administration has stated that it has no higher priority than the safety and security of U.S. citizens abroad. Given Israel’s longstanding failure to deliver accountability for attacks on journalists over the last 20+ years, the U.S. government must ensure that proper investigations are conducted and perpetrators are held accountable. U.S. targeted sanctions and other meaningful consequences must also follow.
Impunity for crimes against journalists must end. Journalism is #NotACrime. cpj.org/2026/10/american-pho…
Here's how U.S. politicians have responded 🪡 ⤵️
"Reports that this was a coordinated attack are incredibly concerning, as are reports that IDF soldiers did not intervene. I will continue to call for an investigation and accountability." — U.S. @SenatorAndyKim xitter.cf/SenatorAndyKim/status/…
I am horrified by this attack on Palestinian villagers and Washington Post photographer Heidi Levine.

Reports that this was a coordinated attack are incredibly concerning, as are reports that IDF soldiers did not intervene.

I will continue to call for an investigation and accountability.
"Today’s violent attack is an example of why Congress should take up my bill, the Stop the Settlements Act, which would impose sanctions on anyone looking to take Palestinian land." — U.S. Representative @JoaquinCastrotx xitter.cf/JoaquinCastrotx/status…
Today’s violent attack is an example of why Congress should take up my bill, the Stop the Settlements Act, which would impose sanctions on anyone looking to take Palestinian land.
Dozens of Israeli settlers attacked Palestinian villagers during an olive harvest in the West Bank. Washington Post journalist Heidi Levine was brutally attacked.
This must be a wakeup call. Attacks like this one pave the way for the violent land grabs taking place throughout the West Bank and push us further away from peace.
