In Casablanca (1942), directed by Michael Curtiz, Rick (Humphrey Bogart) and Laszlo (Paul Henreid) are interrupted when Strasser (Conrad Veidt) leads a group of German officers in singing โDie Wacht am Rheinโ. Laszlo orders the house band to play โLa Marseillaiseโ, and Rick allows it. Patriotism grips the crowd and everyone joins in, drowning out the Germans. Afterwards, Strasser has Renault (Claude Rains) close the club on a flimsy pretext.

As a clerical abuse survivor, I was appalled that this group of bishops would pray over such a cruel man in the Oval, a man found liable for sexual abuse and defamation in a court of law (E. Jean Carroll case) not to mention the mystery of the Epstein files where his name (Trump) appears more than any other currently redacted, one day revealed. In addition, how Trump has treated our immigrant brothers and sisters, Iranian school children killed at beginning of Iran war he started, the killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti on the streets of Minneapolis, the attacks on Pope Leo and taking credit for his election to the papacy, AI images of himself as Jesus Christ and on and on and on. We should pray for our political leaders, and we do during our universal prayers at Mass. But meeting and praying over Donald Trump on the eve of the mid terms. Beyond the pale and such poor judgement. These prelates got manipulated by the master manipulator. Full stop. The apology is welcomed. However, I can forgive but not exonerate. This meeting was shameful and these bishops were played. It was always political for Trump to win back the Catholic vote. Leo and Archbishop Coakley, head of USCCB ought to reign these bishops in. And they ought to also re-read Leo's encyclical Magnifica Humanitas to take in deeply how best to carry the Good News into the world.
