I was fortunate to have discussed some aspects of this with him about a year ago, but I had no idea he was going to cook this hard... When I was going through the blog while it was still in preview, I had several aha moments! It took me 2 hours to read and comprehend it all. This is sooo good. Give it a read!
After a year of quiet work, I'm ready to announce Egres. Egres is a Postgres-compatible database designed to tackle heavy workloads and run thousands of tenants on the same server. It works with psql and drivers unchanged. The post covers the what, the why and the how: manishrjain.com/egres/ For Egres, I wrote a new storage engine called zdb: a tree of LSM trees, which I call an LSM forest. It runs on local disk or object storage, has roaring bitmaps integration for indexing, and can do instant zero-copy branches of a database or a table. Everything runs on zfiber, a coroutine system I wrote for Egres. It meters CPU ticks, disk IOPS and memory used per query, per tenant, so thousands of tenants can share the same server without the noisy neighbor problem. This release is single node and the query features are very basic. Raft replication is already baked in. Future releases will allow multi-node clusters. Try it out! Would love to hear what you think.

Cambridge has always been the best place in the world to be an academic researcher. These days, a lot of cutting edge research also happens in industry, and Cambridge is the home to many amazing research startups, spanning AI research, robotics, biotech, defense, and industrials. We'd love for these two worlds to meet eachother, so we're bringing YC Paper Club to Cambridge! if you're a researcher in industry or academia, request a spot below.

This doesn't replace engineering work. It's reshaping the work so fundamentally that the job starts to look like building for the moment or finding defendable layers against others. It requires more agency, flexibility and intuition, and strategical thinking.

Software is not disappearing, we are producing more software than ever. What is changing is the premise. The modern foundations of software engineering has been built around encapsulation. Today, it's getting hard and sometimes impossible to defend the layering.

Here’s a look at the hard problems these five universities are tackling: @Caltech: Expanding our partnership with Caltech to test whether large language models can accelerate innovative research in mathematics and physical sciences – pushing the boundaries of what AI can do in rigorous scientific domains @OhioStateMed: Developing AI workflows to assist radiologists screening X-rays, building AI tools for earlier heart failure detection, and building clinician-guided AI tools for Alzheimer’s diagnosis. @LSU: Implementing AI to improve non-contact infant tracheostomy monitoring, neurosurgical outcomes, VR training for medical professionals, and more. @IndianaUniv: Applying open-weight models to improve maternal-newborn care and learning, with a focus on tools that work with limited connectivity and accommodate diverse cognitive needs. @UTHealthHouston: Using Muse Glimmer, one of our smallest open-weight models, to support projects that improve treatment for brain cancer and agentic benchmarking in healthcare settings.

100 CISO's... 1000's of employees... Probably the most comprehensive snapshot of the state of security you'll see this year.
In a single year, AI has rewritten the security priority list for CISOs. Attackers are moving faster. Bain estimates AI compresses a typical cyberattack from about four weeks to about 18 hours, and models keep getting better at finding and exploiting weaknesses. There's also more to protect, with employees shipping apps they couldn't have built a year ago and agents getting access to source code, documents, and production systems. In a survey of 100 CISOs at companies with 1,000+ employees, all seven of the most-selected 2027 priorities involve AI. The biggest jumps since 2026: - Internal AI agent security (+28 pts) - AI SOC (+26 pts) - AI offensive security (+24 pts) - AI code security (+23 pts) - AI vulnerability remediation (+22 pts) Last year's staples: - Exposure & vulnerability management (-21 pts) - SIEM / security data (-18 pts) - Privileged access management (-18 pts) From a16z's @OwenColby and @steph_zhang on The New Security Agenda: a16z.news/p/the-new-security…

AI's cyber skills have taken a huge leap in about two years In a test that simulates a 32-step cyberattack on a company network, tracking how far each model gets as it uses more tokens: - GPT-4o, a 2024 model, stalled at step 2 and never improved with more tokens - Today's top models kept improving all the way to 100M tokens, getting about three-quarters of the way through on average - The best attempts finished all 32 steps and took over the entire network From a16z's @OwenColby and @steph_zhang on The New Security Agenda: a16z.news/p/the-new-security…

If you're thinking about "what should I build" - then take a look at this. CISO's are clearly indicating they need to automate their teams work with AI and that all new spend will be AI first. The key isn't to literally read this and run out and build "AI SOC". The key is to infer from tremendous amount of research @steph_zhang and @OwenColby the specific problems security team are trying to solve and figure out what those products look like. The game is only starting and there are still so many things left to build!

I've just finished filming the most ambitious course of my career. It starts November 9th, and runs for 2 weeks. It's everything you need to build your company's software factory. Everyone's talking about how to go FASTER with agents. That's really, really easy. Loops, YOLO mode, dark factory. That's a recipe for a slop cannon. No serious organisation is going to trust a factory like that. So, you need to slow down to speed up. What's the first pedal your driving instructor showed you? Not the accelerator. Once you put the brakes on your agent - to constrain it and increase its output quality - you can start to trust it. The best brakes? Good ol' software fundamentals. Here's what we cover: - Automated Review - Codebase Design - DDD & Ubiquitous Language - Mutation Testing - Feedback Loops From there, the course accelerates. We show you a working factory and build your system design skills. We even plan your infra with you. You'll walk out with a software factory spec, ready to hand to an agent. And you won't be learning alone. You'll have a massive community with you, learning along. We actually opened sales on Monday. It's already on track to be BY FAR the biggest course of my career. Want to join in? Here's the link below: aihero.dev/s/wS5YtK

very weird thing happening rn technical people are sad, they think their skills are now useless non-technical people are desperately wishing they were more technical so they could use agents better

a growing part of how I feel about bun is this whole category of software - linters, formatters, package managers, type checkers, test runners, bundlers this used to be hard software to build and now it can be prompted into existence in a day or two

still thinking about this. we need to finish node compatibility and there’s plenty of open issues to fix + threads but after AOT ships and is good, what other large new thing would we add to future versions of bun? I don’t know. I never thought we’d actually do all this stuff.
