On the last day of her 17-year career, a jail supervisor walked a 6-foot-9 inmate out the door by herself. She told coworkers she was taking him to a mental health evaluation. There was no evaluation.
April 29, 2022. Lauderdale County, Alabama. Vicky White was 56, the jail's assistant director, and due to retire that day. Casey White was serving 75 years and waiting on a capital murder trial.
Inmates going to the courthouse are supposed to have two deputies with them. Nobody questioned her. She was the boss.
In the video below, the jail's own cameras watch her lead him out in his orange jumpsuit, put him in a patrol car and drive away.
The plan had been running for weeks. She sold her house for $95,550, less than half its assessed value, and pulled out the cash. When deputies finally checked the courthouse schedule, there was nothing on it. By then the patrol car was already sitting abandoned in a parking lot.
They disappeared for 11 days.
A car wash worker in Evansville, Indiana, recognized them. A police vehicle rammed their Cadillac into a ditch. Inside: wigs, guns and thousands in cash. On the 911 audio you hear her voice: "Let's get out and run."
She didn't. She shot herself in the car. He came out in handcuffs.
Seventeen years of trust opened that door. How do you check someone nobody thinks to check?

Stephen McDaniel was a 26-year-old law student living in Macon, Georgia, when his neighbour, 27-year-old Lauren Giddings, disappeared in June 2011.
The case became particularly disturbing because McDaniel was interviewed by reporters shortly after Lauren disappeared, publicly discussing his missing neighbour and appearing concerned. During the interview, he appeared visibly shocked when told that police had discovered a b°dy near their apartment building.
Lauren's rema!ns were discovered in a rubbish bin near the apartment complex. Investigators eventually linked McDaniel to the crime, and he pleaded guilty to her murd£r in April 2014, receiving a life sentence.
Lauren's he☆d and l!mbs have never been recovered.
