Seminar weekend closed with YELP and Huduma Fellows joining in a physical exercise session, followed by a closing session on Wellness & Healthy Living facilitated by Dr Kakungulu Edward @Princekaed, Faculty Associate at the LéO Africa Institute, Cardiologist and Huduma Alumnus (2023). 🏃🏾
Among his reflections for the Fellows:
Why both matter. Physical activity strengthens the heart, improves sleep and raises energy, while mental wellbeing sharpens focus and builds resilience under pressure.
How they connect. Exercise lifts mood and eases stress, and a calm mind makes healthy habits easier to keep. When one suffers, the other follows.
Wellness is more than being healthy. Health is often the absence of illness. Wellness is an ongoing choice to thrive across the physical, mental, emotional and social parts of life.
Fellows left fulfilled, energised, and ready to make impact in their careers and personal lives.

Last Tuesday, I was honoured to represent the @ASOU_Official at the Smile Train Uganda Partners Engagement Forum, themed "Stronger together: Advancing Sustainable Cleft Care through Collaboration."
The event brought together all the key stakeholders, including healthcare partners of Smile Train, current and future cleft care providers, representatives from the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development, civil society, professional healthcare associations, and officials from Smile Train, led by the Vice President and Regional Director for Africa, Mrs Nkeiruka Obi.
For 25 years, Smile Train has operated in Uganda, supporting thousands of free, life-changing cleft surgeries and training healthcare providers.
The discussion centred on strengthening comprehensive cleft care across the care pathway for these patients in Uganda. 🇺🇬
Notably, the forum discussed shifting from outreach programs to 1-on-1 partnerships to eventually establish centres of excellence for cleft care in Uganda and integrating cleft care into mainstream healthcare services.
Smile Train further reiterated its commitment to advancing comprehensive cleft care and strengthening surgical safety through capacity building.
The forum developed an action plan with several resolutions, including continued advocacy for surgical policies, especially the National Surgical, Obstetrics and Anaesthesia Plan.
The Association of Surgeons of Uganda was recognised for its valuable partnership with Smile Train, and for its outstanding commitment and unwavering support in advancing quality, comprehensive cleft care in the communities we serve.

TAKING SURGERY TO THE COMMUNITY!
At the Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Conference held at Speke Resort Munyonyo, Prof. Moses Galukande presented on "Taking Surgery to the Community", highlighting the impact of the Association of Surgeons of Uganda @ASOU_Official #ASOUAnnualSurgicalCamps .
Aligned with the conference theme of "positioning community structures as the foundation of Primary Health Care (PHC)", the key takeaways include:
♂️Redefining Surgery: Prof. Galukande challenged the narrative of surgery as the "neglected stepchild" of global health, re-emphasizing that surgical care is preventive, cost-effective, and deliverable at all levels of care.
♂️ Government Commitment: Dr. Ayume Charles @DrAyumeCharles State Minister of Health for PHC committed to championing budget appropriations in Parliament to support the logistics of these pro bono outreach services.
This is what progress looks like.
