Tom Izzo shares why the best thing a leader can do is hold people accountable to their own dreams and how he does this with his teams.
"I always ask them: What do you think my job is for you?"
Most players don't know how to answer. So Izzo tells them:
"The best thing I could do for you is to hold you accountable to your dreams and goals - not mine."
"Sometimes as leaders, we look at what we want instead of what they want."
Izzo has each player write down their goals on a card. Then he uses that card when they push back.
"When he's mad at me because I'm on his butt about academics, I say: You told me you wanted to be an academic All-American. That's not my goal. That was your goal. My job - if I do my job right - is to hold you accountable to your goals."
Leadership isn't about pushing your agenda. It's about helping people become who they said they wanted to be.
Hold them to their dreams - not yours.

Mike Brown has been to seven NBA Finals with four different organizations.
He’s coached LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Steph Curry, Tim Duncan, Kevin Durant, and Jalen Brunson.
When asked what all championship teams have in common, his answer had nothing to do with those nuclear talents.
“The commonality they all had is they all sacrificed for one another.
They were all connected.
They all had a competitive spirit.
And there was a high level of belief... Not just in the process, but in each other.”
He was able to boil down years of success in different places to 4 common traits:
🩸 Sacrifice
🎮 Connectivity
⚠️ Ownership
✝️ Belief
Championship teams don't win solely because they have the best player.
They create a championship environment from ownership starting with the best player all the way to the last player on the bench.
The entire organization is willing to surrender something for something bigger than themselves.
You need good players, yes...
But talent only determines your ceiling.
Sacrifice determines your capacity to reach it.

Your problem isn't consistency. It's the pattern your mind has been repeating for far too long.
Every choice makes that pattern stronger, whether it pushes you forward or holds you back.
Everything shifts when your actions stop depending on your mood.

Giannis says he showed up EARLY to work out with Kobe, and the Black Mamba made him pay for it
“Working out with Kobe, I showed up before him. I love that I did it, but it was a mistake”
“Kobe came and said, ‘What are we gonna do?’ I said, ‘Whatever you tell me to do.’ He said, ‘Go right, make 25.’ I usually make four or five. I said, ‘Yeah… make 25.’ I made 25. ‘Okay, go left, 25.’ Then, ‘Go right, two dribbles’”
“We worked out for two hours, intense, and I’m thinking, I shouldn’t have shot before this, I’m tired, I wanted to show him my best version”
“But here’s what players won’t do today: they won’t be vulnerable. They won’t show weakness, or show appreciation to somebody better. If you always think you’re the best, you can never learn”
“I had my notebook, I asked a lot of questions, he answered every single one, and never made me feel like we were running out of time. It was one of the best experience in my career”

Now this? THIS? This is the song of (my) summer. Fuck all that Spend Dat shit. When I think, "song of the summer", I think lighthearted, upbeat and, most importantly, DANCEABLE. Spend Dat is none of those things. Thank goodness Baby Chief Do It gave us Ghetto Love Story 💕

I sat behind Chris Paul and watched him coach his son’s high school team. One of my friends always uses the appeal to authority fallacy to argue that professional coaches and players know far more than coaches like me. I listened to everything Chris Paul said during the game. It’s the same stuff. Sports are simple. No, I’m not saying Chris Paul doesn’t know more than me about basketball. But sports aren’t complicated. The real job is managing people and personalities.

Draymond Green says basketball is no longer a poor kid's game: “It's a rich kid's game”
“I didn't learn how to do a proper individual workout till I got to college. Growing up I'm going to hoop. Where's the nearest run. Drop me off, I'll play all day. That's what we did. We hooped all day. I think there's a huge benefit to that because you just learn to see the game”
“It's different when somebody just putting you in a position to tell you to do this move. How do you use your creativity? How do you learn if somebody just say do this? How do you know what your game is if you never tap into it and just figure it out”
“I think there's a time and place for a trainer and I think with where the game has gone, you need those resources in order to be successful”
“I feel like basketball used to be a poor man's game. Poor kids played it. We were poor. We had nothing and it was our way out. Basketball is not a poor kid's game no more. Basketball is a rich kid game”
“The days of seeing LeBron James from Akron, Ohio, from a single mom, those days are numbered. Because if you don't have the resources these days, you can't make it. But that’s also why you don't see as great basketball as you did before, because there's no imagination”
“Everybody's doing the same thing, playing the same way. I think a lot of that is due sometimes to having trainers. You just become a carbon copy of somebody else the trainer created”
