Amplifying Culture. Inspiring Equity🎙 Scientific Storytelling
Join us this week as we continue our lecture series, RACISM IN NURSING: THE AFRICAN AMERICAN NURSING EXPERIENCE, PART II: BROKEN PIECES, where we examine the story of a Black nurse named Rose and her unfortunate experience with a fellow Black nurse.
This week, we explore the challenging reality Rose faced when she discovered that another Black nurse was not only stealing her work but using it as a blueprint for her own success—leading to professional violence and, eventually, criminal charges. We review the three years of meticulous documentation Rose compiled regarding the intellectual theft, and we examine the unfortunate reality of how an enabling following emboldened this behavior.
💡..."As a research consultant, Rose exclusively lectured at museums, libraries, and academic institutions, a standard she clearly communicated to everyone who inquired about her work. Historically, it was unheard of for nursing conferences or educational meetings to be held in museum settings, making her choice of venue both unique and professional. However, Rose soon noticed that the Black nurse who had been stealing her work began hosting community conferences at these same museums. This marked the sixth instance of intellectual property theft, proving that this behavior went far beyond mere inspiration—it was something much more malicious."
We take a deep dive into the reality that systemic racism doesn't just impact Black nurses from the outside; it creates compounding effects that manifest as professional violence within the Black nursing community.
In this lecture we have the difficult, necessary conversation about the increasing internal dynamics that continue to hold Black nurses back, and sometimes it is not white nurses, it's among themselves.
Join us as we continue to unpack these critical narratives.

Travel Historian ⏳️ Tryon, North, Carolina 📍
A carefully curated historical adventure on this weekend landed me in Tryon, North, Carolina. A visit to the legacy and home of singer, pianist, and civil rights activist Nina Simone.
She was born Eunice Kathleen Waymon on February 21, 1933 and a stop at her childhood home and neighborhood off of East Livingston Street, help end my year beyond words.
Grateful for the journey of travel, history and storytelling and especially the lived experience. And an even bigger thank you to the iconic Nina Simone. 👏🏾😱

Famed soprano Martina Arroyo has died. She was 90.
With her luminous voice and ease on stage, the Harlem native broke barriers as one of the first major Black opera stars in the 1960s and 1970s.
She was also familiar to the nation’s TV viewers at the time as a frequent guest on Johnny Carson’s “Tonight Show.” She was honored by the Kennedy Center in 2013 — just one of her many awards.
Arroyo announced her retirement in 1989 and devoted herself to teaching.
