Our #WhiteStorks are laying! And this means that our 2023 fieldwork season started! In the next few months, we’ll be very busy monitoring nests, sampling chicks and GPS-tagging adults and juveniles. But don’t worry...we’ll keep you posted about all the news!

NEW PAPER led by @jmarcelinopt!
#WhiteStorks spend 1/3 of migration on stopovers, mainly on landfills. Storks take detours to reach landfills, but there spend less energy eating and more time resting. This may be crucial for storks in poor body condition!

Until the 1980s all (!) Portuguese #WhiteStorks spent the winter in Africa, but today only ~15% (!) of WS adults are migratory! So this year we were surprised to see 2 out of 6 newly tagged WS adults crossing the Sahara! Will they repeat their journeys in the upcoming years? 🤔
Although most adult #whitestorks in the Iberian Peninsula are now resident, this year, two of the six tagged storks have migrated and are currently in Africa.
We are excited to see what they will be doing over the winter and when they will decide to return.

All but one of our birds have been recovered. Please note they are free flying birds. They’ve just gotten taken away on wind and thermals. They aren’t caged, they fly free alongside cranes, parrots and pelicans every day. These are imprinted birds

Okay, probably the last we will see of these gorgeous birds this year but glad that they got the double spread they deserve, along with a great pic by Jo Whiting of the storks on the railway bridge at Shoreham. Hope to see them again soon. @ProjectStork @KneppWilding – at Brighton, England
