Doctors predicted he wouldn’t live past 13. He went on to pass his university entrance exam lying face down on a yoga mat.
Jiang Yanchen, from Shandong, China, grew up with a condition that gradually folded his body backwards into a “Z.” His head nearly touched his hips.
In 2022, he earned a place at Dezhou University. But while his education progressed, his body kept deteriorating.
By 2024, the deformity was squeezing his organs into an increasingly narrow space. He was suffering respiratory failure.
Surgeons began a series of four high-risk operations that December, cutting and realigning sections of his spine and releasing his hip joints.
The final operation took place in June 2025.
Jiang also spent around six hours a day on rehabilitation.
That August, aged 21, he stood and walked with a walker.
He was preparing to return to university. His next goal was postgraduate study.
