I’d like to point out a detail in that painting that I love for personal reasons: my late father was a carpenter and joiner, and Millais gives St Joseph typical carpenter’s arms, thin but sinewy, muscles formed by hour upon hour of repetitive movements, every day for years.

That's the painting Dickens savaged in 1850, calling the young Christ a 'wry-necked, blubbering, red-headed boy'. The little wound in his palm from a nail, foreshadowing the Crucifixion, is what makes it so striking up close. Sounds like a great lecture.
