Karl Bushby left home at 29 to walk around the world and figured he'd be back in twelve years. He is 57 now, he has just stepped onto British soil for the first time in 28 years, and his mother's front door in Hull is still 250 miles away. He made two rules in 1998 at the southern tip of Chile: he could not use transportation to move forward, and he could not go home until he got there on foot. The ocean between Alaska and Russia should have ended the whole attempt. He has spent nearly half his life keeping a promise he made to himself at 29, while everything back home kept changing without him.
