I’ve reached out to contacts familiar with MPD to determine whether the homeowner is cooperating. Could the homeowner be reluctant to pursue charges now that the incident has become politically embarrassing for Katie Hobbs and her supporters? Did they share the video before realizing the individual was canvassing for their own political side? We don’t know, but it’s a fair question. And let’s be clear: Had this been a pro-Andy Biggs canvasser, would the media be calling her a generic “political canvasser,” or would Biggs’ name be plastered across every headline? The individual was distributing pro-Hobbs literature. That’s a fact. Political accountability shouldn’t disappear the moment the person responsible turns out to be on your own side.

Your own reporting confirms she was distributing pro-Katie Hobbs literature on behalf of LUCHA. Those of us who work hard, knock doors, and engage voters honestly shouldn’t be lumped into a vague, politically neutral category when the facts clearly establish the nature of her political activity. And suggesting I “falsely” associated her with Katie Hobbs is an interesting characterization. She was going door-to-door distributing pro-Hobbs campaign literature. Whether she was employed directly by Hobbs’ campaign or by an independent organization advocating for her election is an important legal distinction, but it doesn’t change the political purpose of her work. And online my characterization is completely accurate. There’s a difference between clarifying a campaign’s organizational relationships and obscuring the partisan nature of the activity itself. The public deserves reporting that makes both distinctions clear, not selective precision that leaves readers with an incomplete picture.
